My windscreen needs replacing and Esure have arranged for a VW windscreen to be fitted through Autoglass. Initially I was very dubious about getting a mobile fitter to fit it, thinking that the quality of fit would not be as good as if they did it at the workshop. However, due to Autoglass's complete incompetence and total refusal to be flexible with times they want the car at the workshop, I am contemplating just getting them to come out and do it.

Does anyone have any experience, good or bad with mobile fitting? Is it worth trying to arrange it on a day off and for it to be done at the workshop??

I had one changed by a mobile fitter on my driveway on a Saturday morning, no problems whatsoever for me. Can't see there being much difference between workshop and mobile anyway really, it's the same procedure.

Never, ever, ever, ever use Auto Windscreens

I've used them, originally in March to have a windscreen replaced.

They replaced it the first time, and they used to incorrect trim around the screen (I didn't know at the time as it looked similar), so would come out at high speeds and flap about all the over the place. He also knocked my pillar panel off and didn't refit properly so kept rattling

Anyway, I called them back to sort the trim, turns out it was also installed an inch too high (lolwut?)

So they replaced it, except this was even worse, it sounded like I was in a windtunnel, and there was dried glue over running everywhere. So again, got them to come back and replace

Guy came back, and re fit it, this time leaving my rear view mirror hanging off, and forgetting to use glue all the way round, meaning my car was freezing and had a really high pitched whistle all the way round the edges.

Came back, again, and replaced it. A day later, I had a crack go all the way up from one end to the top.

I phoned up to tell them, I want my money back, they're hopeless and I'll go elsewhere. They told me they'll send their best person out and I agreed to let them have one more go. So this Tuesday they replaced it again and so far so good, so fingers crossed. He also said the last guy who fit it, the one where it cracked had obviously forced it in at the bottom a bit too hard and it had caused a stress fracture.

A mobile chap comes & does All the work my mate Jim needs & I've watched him work a few times, No worrys at all. Mint the car up before the dude comes though so he knows you care for the Motor & make sure he uses a wing gaurd/mat whatever its called.

Thanks Steedie, a company clearly worth staying well away from. This is Autoglass and if they start destroying £400 VW windscreens I doubt my insurance company will be too happy lol!

I agree that autoglass are rubbish. Had a rear window replaced on mine - it took 2 weeks for them to source it. Then they came and "fitted" it. The guy said he'd never done one so couldn't do it (why send him then??) then it took 2 more attempts and i'm still unhappy with the finish.

Lesson learnt i guess!

If it's through insurance do you have a choice of who they use?

Reading all of these windscreen threads reminds me of when we needed to get a truck windscreen replaced.

By god this was an epic saga. 3 times they turned up with the wrong screen. 4th time the fool dropped it. (Que all of us laughing at him) 5th time they managed to get it right.

Truck waqs off the road for nearly a week in our busiest period.

Funnily enough mine is being done tomorrow afternoon at work by Autoglass (again, insurers choice). We'll see how it goes...£75 excess, so not too much.

I had my windscreen replaced last year.

a) Windscreen guy turns up with genuine BMW screen
b) Windscreen guy removes old screen, cracking it in the process and covering the wing and bonnet it shards of glass. Unknown to me at the time, he also slips with his knife and gouges paint off the wing.
c) Windscreen guy realises he has brought the wrong screen, and tells me it'll be 2 days before he can get the right one. He offers to drive my car, in the rain, 5 miles to his depot to 'keep it safe'. I decline.
d) Windscreen guy comes back the next day after I rang around and found them a new windscreen.
e) Windscreen guy fits new screen, without any protection on the paintwork, whilst grinding the previous days shards of glass into my paintwork.
f) Windscreen depot manager is a douche and says its 'pointless' getting it respray as it'll 'look like its been in a smash'
g) Windscreen companies head office are beside themselves with embarrasment and authorise complete vehicle respray of every panel forward of the A pillar, at BMW.

Net result = new Windscreen and a lovely front end.

ah, are the pics for members only, sorry. I guess I could re-host them but the story detail is harrowing enough without the images.
Mostly they just show a soaked interior as it was raining and the guy didn't use a cover, blood everywhere where he cut himself when he smashed the old screen out and various scratches / ripped headlining.
