Windscreen stone chip on motorway

After school today, I thought I'd go for a drive, so I got onto the M4, and just as I joined the motorway from the slip road, something caught my eye in front of me, next second... CRACK!

A largish stone flew up from the pickup van in front of me, and made a little crack on my windscreen. The crack is around 1cm in diametre, and it seems to have hit the windscreen in two places, both a very close distance apart, though I cannot feel the crack from the inside of the screen. I've got some pictures below, but the quality isn't very good, as the light was fading and it was very windy - couldn't hold camera still.

What I want to know is, does that look serious, will it get worse over time, and whether I should leave it or get it repaired?

Try and get it repaired, and as long as it isn't really in your line of sight you should still be ok for MOT time.

Do you have any rough ideas how much it would cost to get that crack repaired? I'm guessing it may be quite a lot.

MOT isn't until next summer, so plenty of time to get it sorted.

Most Halfords etc do those free chip repair demo's on Saturdays, there's also one in a local Tesco here.

EDIT
I mean there's a guy doing them in the car park with a stall, it isn't a service offered by Halfords themselves.

I'll have a look on the weekend, but have you any ideas how much the guy will charge to carry out the repair if I approach him?

Whats your insurance policy cover you for??? On mine I have to pay £75 excess if the windscreen needs replacing but its free if they repair it. Would be worth checking your paperwork.

And it's not exactly a free service as such, they claim on your insurance, so might as well do the job properly and have a shiny new windscreen!

I had 3 new windscreens in the first 2 months of owning my car, one was a stone chip, next two were stress cracks from the cold.

I claimed for all three and it doesn't affect your NCB.

"If the chip on your windscreen is smaller than a £1 coin, Autoglass® can usually repair it at no cost to you if you have fully comprehensive insurance"

I'm assuming thats going through the insurance and making a claim of some sort?

Yep thats what my insurance covers. It does go through your insurers but doesn't class as a claim of any sort. One of the perks of being fully comp :)

Repairs are rubbish, well the one I had was. Got a chip on the windscreen of my car, Autowindscreens came out, 'repaired it', still blatantly visible.

Passed the MOT though even though its in drivers line of sight..

Alrite guys, thanks for the options, I'll sort it out tomorrow morning!

I just want to get it fixed before the chip could potentially turn into a crack. Read that it could happen, but that was on the Autoglass website... so it might be sales talk. Either way, I'm just hoping to get it done relatively soonish. :)
