The two times I've got companies out to sort chips, they've faffed about for an hour, then knocked on the door proclaiming either that they can't do anything with the chip, or that they've had a go, screwed up and most likely weakened the screen in the process. Nice.

For a fiver, I'd have a go with a DIY kit on a warm, dry day. Or not bother. Or get a new windscreen.

If it was that good it would have already taken off and there wouldn't be multi million pound contracts between glass repair companies and insurers

While a DIY kit might be a good way to go about it if you are considering to get adept at fixing such chips in the future, it will take a lot of time and won't be as cheap as you think. A better option would be to simply call out a mobile windscreen repair service as they will be prompt and won't break the bank as @mattyfez pointed out right above.

But yeah, going ahead with DIY, will give you a few ideas to avoid such situations in the future.

I had a bash, first time, never used it before.
Mine came out fine.

Worst case scenario you're gonna end up with a blob of the stuff, that you use the supplied razor blade to shave back.

I had a stone chip and small crack on my windscreen.

I called Autoglass last Tuesday, 2 mins later I had an appointment booked for Thursday, paid my £10 excess.

I get a text to confirm they coming. Thursday the chap calls to confirm the exact time. He turns up, fixes that and a few other chips. Job done. No faff!

I had a staone chip on my screen, I paid best part of a fiver in Asda.
Didnt need to make an appointment, spent 20mins or so cleaning, filling and shaving.

Never had a new windscreen or had a crack get worse in 15yrs of driving, not quite sure why people panic about it so much.

I've got auto glass coming again today for a 2nd attempt at replacing my RR windscreen. They brought the wrong glass last time only realising once they had dismantled half of my interior and got their grubby hand prints onto the cream carpet on my door pillars.

Very much hoping for a better experience today This is my first unfortunate experience of a cracked screen and it is already something I am dreading ever happening again.

Dark Art ? My first laugh of the day so Thanks.

I went down Dartford a few years ago to do a course repairing Windscreens & there is No dark art at all & those listening to those that make a living fixing chips/cracks are funnier than it being called a Dark art. All the fancy names & Faff is just to make it seem like they are actually doing something you can't

Only mistake you can make using a DIY kit is not getting the moisture out of the chip before using the Kit. Other than that it's a piece of ****.

Also as has been said earlier has anybody had a chip spread ? Has anybody had a windscreen replaced because a chip has grown whilst out on a drive ?

Chip spread? yes, last week. Over a couple of months a stone chip grew to a small crack (5mm) and then eventually to a decent sized crack (30cm).

While driving? In my case it was thermal fatigue from the car sitting in the sun all day. No issue driving into work in the morning, but when returning to the car after work the crack had appeared.


Autoglass replaced the windscreen at the weekend with no issues, so I can't complain about the service.

The Few times it happens doesn't warrant the BS industry that has been built around it, Trust me even during the course I said to the "Instructor" this is a Scam & he just looked at me & even he couldn't deny it to my face.
Even using you as an example when it happened you just phoned autoglass & got a new screen. Only time it warrants a fix DIY or other is if you are running an old car don't have windscreen cover & you have a heated screen.

Yes, sitting at traffic lights in my e92 and a chip near the A pillar spread the entire width of the screen. It was below freezing outside so probably the heat on the screen caused it even though I was trying to be careful how fast I warmed the interior up.
