We don't seem to have a thread on this yet, except for the death so...

Just watching the ski jumping and I don't really see the appeal, i'm a massive skiing fan but just why...:p Especially as they have two hills for different competitions.

Probably just bitter because the Downhill has been cancelled.:(

Super-G, Downhill and the new entrant ski cross are my three favourite events these olympics, what's yours?

I love the jumping, especially as I've stood at the top of one of these jumps. Nothing but admiration for these guys.................and they weigh in at about 10 stone.

The Ski Jumping is good but better on the bigger hills when they glide a lot more. The small hill and short jumps are rather tame as are the comparitive noise in Canada compared to the European events!

Same story with the Biathlon less crowd noise, a less interesting track and somehow as usual the director has missed the action. That said I can't wait for the next one.

I'm watching it keenly - and loving the fact that it's on BBC HD .

I was in Canada last summer and went to Vancouver and Whistler so recognise loads of it and wish I was back there!, and I know Adam Pengilly who's in the GB Skeleton team (got silver in Lake Placid).

Perhaps a passing mod could merge the two? :)

Where's the second one?

(the only one I can see is about the death of the luger, not the olympics itself)

Maybe that was the reason it wasn't too good, normally there is way more noise with cow bells and the like.

Why are the BBC currently showing speed skating (which I find very boring by the way?)?

On their schedule it says Freestyle skiing should be on, that sounds better.......

I'm watching it. Vaguely interesting but most of these winter sports get tedious to watch. Not a patch on summer olympics.

Jennifer Heil just missed out on the gold to some USA chick - boo hiss - crappy night down in cypress too, pretty foggy for the earlier girls.

Downhill got postponed today due to slushy snow, not really sure what they are expecting, its not showing any signs of getting colder. Super warm for this time of year, freezing levels are mid mountain.

20-30cm expected tonight

Have to say, I go for the ice-sports myself, mostly the Ice-Hockey, but also the sliding events (gotta love those crashes... morbid as it seems)

Some of the skiing is good, especially the downhill and slalom.

in fact, come to think of it, the only stuff I find particularly boring, is the skating (speed skating especially)

The judging is a bit of a joke tbh. The first canadian girl, the 18 year old before jennifer heil, imo did the best first kick off somersault, big, confident, daring and with a twist in it, landed perfectly, followed by another solid kick off before finishing. Yet somehow the yank won after what I thought was a good but less impressive run.
That canadian girl should have taken gold.

Were you listening to commentary at all? I watched the moguls live on BBC2 and the commentator said that the american who won had the best turns they'd seen and that turns are worth 50% of the mark. She was also a couple of seconds faster and time is worth another 25% so she deserved to place higher.

I'd never really watched any winter sports other than figure skating before but decided to watch some of the live coverage last night and really enjoyed it. I hope team GB does well, particularly the Kerrs in ice dance who are originally from the rink I skate at and are great skaters :).

The BBC coverage is shocking. Dumbed-down, condensed and reality show emotional background music. Changed channel after 15 minutes of the Luge event.

Every GB representative I've watched so far is just using ancient ancestry because they are not good enough to get into their own 'country' of birth teams???

Who are they? I only really know the skiiers who as far as I know are all definately British. A lot of the African countries on the other hand, either British or American!:p

I guess part of the problem is they have to condense hours of events occuring over our night into the evening. It is a bit annoying though, I'm with you there as I can't keep up some times.:(

6 Golds? Eh, where did they come from?! Just goes to show the confusion.

Really? I know the skating team are all actually from the UK, although I guess that's only 7 out of 52 athletes.

I agree with Spie about the commentary on BBC, it does feel very dumbed down. I watched the opening ceremony on iplayer and felt that there was a lot of talking for the sake of talking and I learned very little about the teams despite so much commentary when they were marching.
It's nice to be spoon fed a little for sports I know nothing about but I'll be watching the skating events on Eurosport because I like Chris Howarth.
