Got offered some part worn Michelin Pilot Alpin pa2 5mm tread all round never had a puncture. 215 45 17 for the Type R for £140

Does it sound like a good deal with that amount of tread depth left. The way im looking at it is anything must be better than my summer tyres with 4mm left on them.
Was looking at the price of new winter tyres and your looking at £600 fitted

Is that £140 for all 4?

It is cheap, but I don't trust 2nd hand tyres. The tyres are the only thing on the road and they need to keep you safe.

Yeh £140 for all four. I know the car they came off, he sold the car during summer and forgot he had them in storage. Told me none has had a puncture. I would not trust tyres from an unknown source either.

Seems like a good deal unless there is some other winter tyres that can be had for around 60 a tyres but think that's impossible in the Type R sizes

So when you buy a used car, you replace all 4 tyres?

Out 5 of the 6 cars I have bought have been through a dealer and all of them new tyres were already on them or put into the deal when talkng about price.

Admittedly I have had some ropey cheap but new tyres thrown on at dealers in the past, but 2nd hand they were not.

I have had a few issues with tyres in my time and I don't want to scrimp on safety when my family onboard.

But if you know the history of the tyres and trust the guy selling, I would not have an issue.

You know what he means, the problem with part worns is the why. There is no why on a used car, you know exactly why the tyres are part worn. That said I can think of many more sensible reasons why part worn winters may be available than summers.

Winter tyres I certainly wouldn't have a problem buying used. As you say, various reasons why you'd come across a pretty untouched set of winter part-worns. You're also far less likely to be doing high speed on winter tyres, the compounds aren't really suited to long distance motorway jaunts anyway.

And just because you know why the tyres on your used car are used, doesn't make them any less mis-treated than part worns that aren't on a car. Having said that I'd not be buying part-worn summer tyres.

Same. Generally winter tyres are used for ~4 months a year and so a tyre with 4mm of tread left will have been used for 2-3 years for 4 months at a time and it is entirely possible for the owner to have switched cars after this time - meaning that used winter tyres probably come up for sale a lot more and with a genuine reason for sale than summer tyres.

I say go for it.

I have a set of winters on my car currently and have run them since last november. Michelins. All 4 cost me £160 fitted and 2 were like new and 2 had 5.5mm on them. Should last me through this winter if I don't get a new car as well...

Many part worns are fine. A lot are changed by over zealous dealers and non caring owners allowing them to change them...

DAvE18, hope you don't mind me tagging on two short questions I've been meaning to ask about Winter Tyres, but, is it important to replace all x4 tyres? Or can you get away with x2? (i.e. just replace the driving wheels)

I'd like to get a set of winter tyres and I've been looking at the Dunlop Winter Sport 3D's in 225/40/18R and they are £166ea... so if I can get away with x2 that would be excellent. Also, are you safe to drive with them on over say the whole winter months even if there is no snow on the ground? I'm guessing people don't take them on/off on a day to day basis and just leave them on for the few months?

Thanks. :)

Never ever just replace 2 summer tyres with 2 winters - its a quick way to a tree, wall or someone elses boot!

EDIT: You use them all winter, anything up to 15 degrees is fine. Below 8 degrees is ideal and they will improve wet, ice and snow performance. (And yes, before some smart alec comes along and says you just slide on ice, winter tyres DO give more grip on ice than summer tyres.)

Noted, thanks for the help. :)

I'm just going to get a taxi if it's really bad. Would work out cheaper than a set of tyres for my distance I need to get to.

Heh I thought about trying to get away with 2 tyres as well but when reading up the big answer was dont be stupid :D

5mm of tread is fairly low for winter tyres the wear indicator will be around 3-4mm compared to 1.6mm for summer tyres.

But still only half worn at most so plenty good enough for our weather as the biggest bonus is the sipes and tread compound/pattern not the depth which aid cold weather and slippery conditions where as tread depth is more use for deep snow which we dont get loads of.

They are more than half worn they come with 10-12mm of tread and need replaced at 3 or 4mm.

10mm new, 5mm part worn = half by my calcs. They do not NEED replacing at 3-4mm, it is only recommended for optimum performance which i've already explained why this isnt so important in the UK.
