7zip is inherently better from a technical standpoint, but I do prefer the Winrar GUI.
As for the issue of 7zip not being supported/confusing people, I did some testing a while back and found that a self-extracting 7zip exe with Ultra compression was still smaller than a zip/rar file (although with smaller archives this probably isn't the case due to the overhead).
I haven't used winzip at home for god knows how long, Version 8 I think.
Personally I still use Winzip and have had licenses for it since 5.6, (which arrived on a floppy from the States)
I considered getting Winrar as I had a couple of .rar files I wanted to extract but the latest levels of Winzip will deal with them so no problem there. I have tried 7zip a few times but never liked its feel as an application, whilst it works it seemed lower quality with a more primative interface to me.
It's not as if Winzip is an expensive application.
