I have a external WD hard disk and it has stopped working (fails to spin up) so I am going to send it back to a competitor for a replacement. Now I am worried if the competitor sends it to WD, if WD will try and make it work and read the data on it?

I was planning on putting it on top of the Logitech Z-5500 subwoofer for a few hours with it at full blast - will that make any difference?

Lol, quick somebody find Goldenglory's thread hahah!
edit - WD said in the RMA form I had to fill out that they wouldn't attempt data recovery. I think they sometimes do upon special request though you might have to pay for it (don't quote me on this - I'm not sure they do this now). Think about it - the number of drives they must receive per day, they wouldn't have the means to attempt data recovary on them all..

Well it is going back to the competitor... I just don't want them to try and look at the data, lol! It's not that there is anything dodgy or illegal on there, but I rather not have someone looking at my personal data :p

If you have smutty pictures of ex's I demand you post them here, in the Hard Drive section of a computer forum :)

lol that guy was so stupid to sell a hard drive on ebay before relising he had to whip it of some mega pornage overdosing lol. And he was so incredibly dumb to close the hard drive whiper half way through! Just dont do it!

Do you have access to a large electromagnet? ;)

I was under the impression that they fix the drive, zero format it then sell it again. Granted there has been incidents where they haven't formatted it... Are there any WD diagnostic tools that do a zero format as well? Otherwise there really isn't that much else you can do afaik.
