Can anyone recommend a decent and not hugely expensive wire and pipe detector. I have one that must be about 15 years old and was a rubish cheap on when I bought it then. I'm guessing that things have improved since I bought mine!

Work issued me a Bosch GMS120. As scanners go, it's been good, but not without it's issues. But they're the same issues you get with all scanners - they can be just plain wrong.

You can't just use them blindly. You have to apply some thought and awareness of your situation and what could and couldn't be there and where. They're more of an indicator; suggesting something might be there.

I like the Bosch as it goes as far as trying to tell you where the centre is - it's not just a simple yes/no.

I bought a Zircon Studsensor i65 a few years back for one job where I needed to fix things to joists the other side of a ceiling without being able to make a bunch of test holes, and used it afterwards for putting up TV brackets on stud walls. Worked perfectly.
