I have a pyrolytic oven, that means I can set to a self clean mode that takes the temperature very high, turning any black stuff inside the oven to ash. I can then clean the inside of the oven with a cloth, and a bit of Astonish and the oven is brand new with less than 30 minutes effort.

However I've left the wire racks inside the oven while it was on. They're now not the right colour - sort of goldish with a purple sheen.

They still of course function the same, but I'd like to have them the same colour as they were when I bought them. I've looked at new racks and it'd be a fortune to replace them.

I've no idea if it is possible to get them back to the original colour, I'm thinking they may even have a coating which has now been destroyed.

I have tried cleaning them, using bleach and using Astonish.

Does anyone have any ideas?

You can actually get these bags that the wire grills will go in with the solution from the bottle. Although I would imagine the instructions do tell you to remove the racks beforehand.

pound shops usually sell them and they work brilliant

I'm about to put an Asda grocery order in anyway, so I'll add Oven Pride to that. I've been over to Which? and they say it's the best for cleaning the wire racks.

I'll report back on how it does!

Not sure if it is just me, but it sounds like the metal itself has reacted in the heat , as opposed to dirt on the racks, like the colour change steels typically go through when tempered, search "temper colours"

does it look like this ?

That's what I had feared, it's £90 for replacement racks.

I'll still see how this oven pride stuff does, for all it costs I'll give it a shot.

Yeah, I looked at those...

That worries me - the last thing I want is to be putting a casserole back into the oven after giving it a stir, and boiling hot sticky liquid to coat my legs.

I'd stick with the ones I have rather than ones that I was worried about.

As to the oven pride stuff, I'll give it a shot... maybe they'll look a uniform colour after trying it, it's only £3. For all I know it might be achieving those results by taking the surface off.

Now that is a useful link. It seems to say that the temperature when my oven is in a cleaning cycle is not hot enough to cause oxidation. It also says that it can be removed by hydrochloric acid. That means I think it's worth a three quid punt - but I'm not expecting a miracle. It's reasonable to think though that if it's able to have 10 year old racks coming up as new then it'll be some powerful stuff in it.
