I have setup my Netgear WNDR3700 as a wireless access point (by using the AP option in the admin GUI). Everything appears to work ok but if I try to access the admin interface on the router via 192.168.1.2, it runs like a dog. It does load some of the page content but after 5/10 minutes it time's out.

Any ideas? Is it worth me sticking DD-WRT on it?

So which router are you using? How long is your cable run between the router and the 3700 which you have setup as a WAP?

Why use a router as a WAP instead of a proper WAP?

Have you switched off routing/DHCP etc.
