Wireless access point?

Hi all.

I'd like to be able to use me laptop in bed but sadly at the moment my wireless signal is really patchy in there.

Would I be right in thinking I could get a wireless access point to connect to a network hub in the bedroom (I already have a network lead into the bedroom) which would then allow access to network and internet?

If I've got this right, can anyone recommend any? Ideally nice and cheap. ;)

I think something like a DLink DIR-615 would do the job. Can be got quite cheaply. Plug that into your hub and that will give off a wireless connection for you to join and also offers a wired connection.

Not 100% sure though, I'd wait for someone more knowledgeable to reply. :p

Hmmm, would I even need the hub if I used something like that or would I be able to just hook the exisiting network lead into the switch on the dlink ?

Anyone any thoughts on this, or any better suggestions?

You can either wire in an access point or the cheaper option mentioned above (DIR-615) is a wireless router, however you will need to turn off DHCP on it else it will conflict with your existing router. Apart from that, just run a to the 'AP' and set up the wireless password and you're away.

Seems like that is a nice cheap option then, would I plug the exisiting network lead into the internet port of the DIR-615 or into one of the network sockets?

As luck would have it, a friend of mine a few months ago got hold of a wireless router/switch at a bootfair for a couple of quid, thinking he would be able to use it with his computer but not realising it didn't have a modem built in!!!

He said I can have it,so hopefully I'll be able to hook it up in the same way as the 615, and get it working!!! :)

Just as a side note, remember that the new access point will have a different wireless channel and pass phrase, so if you leave your bedroom with the laptop, you may lose connection to the AP, and then have to connect to the main wireless router, before getting internet back.

If you want constant roaming, you would need a wireless range extender instead, but this could mean slower file copies between PCs.

Pretty cheap. If you look around they are often called extenders or repeaters but can be had for as low as £20.

If you set the same SSID and password on both routers/ap's then it will roam between them. Google extended service set...

Hmmm sounds like I'll have to pop back in here to get help when I finally get around to picking up the router from my friend. Setting the SSID etc, sounds a bit taxing...especially as I'm super tired today.

Digging up an old thread I realise but I have finally managed to get hold of the router from my friend and would like to see if I can get it working to give me decent wireless in the bedroom.

The router is a Netgear WGR614v7...

Would anyone be able to talk me through setting it up to act as a wireless extender/access point...ideally using the same SSID so my phone/laptop can roam between the two as 23JMZ07 mentioned?

If anyone can help I'd be most grateful...in the mean time I shall have a tinker...which often leads to problems...lol ;)

*****EDIT*****

Well, I gave it a whirl, using a bit of info I found on the the Netgear site and incredibly I have got it to work, I now have excellent wifi in the bedroom :)
