Wireless Bandwidth Controlling

Hello all,

My housemate is a keen photographer and is constantly uploading large files to a website (i presume). I have 20mb Virgin cable, when he is uploading, me or my partner can hardly browse the web, let alone even attempt to game.

The QOS on my Netgear is next to useless, so I have been looking at getting a Linksys wireless router and installing Tomato..

What I want to do is limit the bandwidth to his IP or MAC address.

Will tomato allow me to easily do this?

Cheers

Tomato will implement proper QoS. You can set minimum bandwidth levels for a set QoS priority or you can just set your machines to be of higher priority to his. Thus if the bandwidth becomes contended your requests are processed first and his are buffered and held back. Priority is better as it'll alllow more dynamic control of who gets what bandwidth. It's common practice to use this to stop lumbering database connections and file servers interrrupting VoIP calls on trunks. if it does that it'll do what you want.

Welcome!

The below screenshot shows the Tomato QOS classification page. This is an older version of Tomato (latest is 1.25) but note the 'any address' box on the pull down box. This allows the following settings:

Dest IP
Src IP
Src MAC

So you can filter by any of the options you stated.

This router + Tomato FW = win :)

Limiting his download speeds won't solve anything.
Most consumer router QoS seems to concern itself with prioritizing download packets.
You need to cap his uploads in a big way, or just talk about it with him.
