I’ve recently moved in my new Student House.

We've got the internet all sorted as it was installed today (Virgin Media 30mb)

Unfortunately I’m in the room furthest away from the super hub and my wireless connection from my PC and Xbox are being very temperamental.

I never lose connection, not yet anyway, but sometimes it’s as if I’m not even connected and just stops sending data.

I was thinking about doing something in regards to boosting signals, but I don’t know how to go ahead with this.

Can anyone help me out here?

You could wire an additional access point half way or use a wireless extender half way to relay the signal. You could also replace your antenna with more directional antenna to improve your reception.

What works best guys ?

Ive been looking at the Netgear WN2000RPT, Anyone use one of those ?

Or has anyone just gone with a good Powerline Adapter and has seen good results?

Powerline adapters do a great job, I can definitely recommend using them.

I've never used wi-fi boosters, but I've heard that they boost the noise along with the signal, so if your problem is interference, it might not do a thing for you.

One the other hand, maybe you could give this a try... You have nothing to lose and at the very worst you'll have youself a fun evening ;) How to boost your WiFi signal with a beer can

Powerline is a good shout. Pluck a cheap Linksys WRT54G and stick DDWRT or Tomato on it, take the powerline feed into the WAN port and disable the firewall on the 54G. Wireless and wired ports in your room, shouldn't have too many problems with NAT if you disable the 54G's firewall - or even the DHCP server. Get all your DHCP from the VM Superhub...

Powerline are OK if you have OK wiring. I had them in a victorian terrace with iffy wiring and they were awful. Moved to a new-ish build (10 years old) and they work amazingly well and according to the software they are syncing at full speed.

I'm not really sure what im looking at in terms of these powerline adaptors ?

Would this be a good canditate?

Also Do i basicly just plug these suckers in and then just go through there control panel via an ethernet on them to connect them to my network?

I'd lose the competitor link if I was you.

Unless you’re on a really tight budget you’d be better off with the 200Mbp/s versions. These are worth consideration http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=NW-032-TP&groupid=46&catid=1604&subcat=2024

You just plug them in and they work. There’s no configuration to do apart from enabling encryption, and this can normally be done by pressing buttons on the adapters.

The software that comes with them will allow you to see what the achieved transfer rate is, but doesn’t do much else.

Opppsss i forgot about the competitor links rules.

Yeah ive gone ahead and bought one of those yesterday so i'll see how it goes next week when its here.
