Hey guys, I'm after a wireless cable router for my Virgin Media broadband, and to connect my laptop and PS3 to the internet.

I've been looking at the Linksys WRT54G2, how do they perform? Is there a better alternative? I always prefer Linksys, and can't stand Belkin after several bad experiences with them

I suggest the WRT54GL if you are adamant about linksys. I also recommend the Buffalo WHR G125 which is cheaper and better (updated chipset). Both can even use third party firmware (tomato and dd-wrt). I advise against most other linksys models (low RAM/flash and cannot support 3rd party firmware). I'm assuming you mean wireless-G and not -N.

Anyone experiencing internet drop outs on the PS3 when using the WRT54GL router?

I've got the WRT54GSv4 router and that does it, I recently bought a cheap Belkin thinking that the Linksys has had it and that hasn't solved the problem.

Infuriating!!

I tried dd-wrt but that didn't help matters. I've not heard of tomato firmware.

I've tried changing the channel from 6 to 11, still does it :(

stable, feature filled, easy to use firmware.

i swear by it

every router i've installed for friends / randoms with Tomato on, I've never had to 'pop round' to sort anything out for them :)

it's got a very sleek gui, and a handy bandwidth monitor.

you can also tell it to give certain mac addresses the same ip.... (static dhcp) so you setup the router to give out certain ip's to certain pc's, handy for port forwarding if you need to do it

win/win situation :)

for about 19 months, i've never had to restart the router

Sounds good... Have you had any issues with a PS3 before? I might need to ask you a few Q's.

Just to confirm this tomato firmware will work with the WRTGSv4?

Just installed 'tomato' from the dd-wrt and cleared the NVRAM and I must admit it's a breeze to install!!

Time to add security and give the PS3 a whirl.

Love the real time bandwidth and the option to review the previous 24 hours, weekly and monthly periods.

Let's hope it answers my problems!

Just chatting to someone on Linksys support and he has told me to amend the MTU to manual and 1400, it was on 1500 (he doesn't know I am using Tomato).

Just played someone and I think they quit as my internet stayed intact and I was winning 1-0 on 84 mins before it says opponent has quit on FIFA09.

My internet just flatlined...

Disconnected from PSN too :(

the survey will show all other routers in the area and what channels they're on.

set the channel of the router to a unique one and it should help :)
