wireless computer to laptop network

hello, i have wireless on my laptop and a netgear usb wireless dongle
ive been trying to setup so i can network the 2 computers using ad hoc? i have the two connected to the same network but i carnt see or access the other computer how can i get it so i can send/receive files.

Make sure that they are both using the same Workgroups name.

WHat OS is running on each machine and when the machines are connected to each other what IP address does each one get assigned ?

my laptop is xp home my tower is xp pro. ip assigned is 192.168.0.1 for the laptop 192.168.0.3 for the tower, network name is HOME on both computers, they connect and send info but nothing is beeing received

allow file and print sharing through your firewalls!

Can each machine ping each other ?

Are either machine visible via My Network Places

carnt ping eachother times out

Can you post exactly what is in the TCP/IP setting on each machine. Screen shot might be best. Also the details in System/Computer Name

now the tower

On the tower try entering the default gateway as 192.168.0.1

ok getting pings accross on both computers now, but still nothing in the my network places under view workgroup computers nothing comes up, and i cannot access the other computer

Have you got File And Printer Sharing ticket in the Network properties ?

Sorry not very good on network stuff but am good on the DSL stuff

go into the connection properties it is on the General screen where it should list CLient For Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP etc and one of them that should be there is File And Printer Sharing and this should be ticked
