Wireless connection problem

I have a Dell laptop that can connect to the Internet via Ethernet but cannot connect wirelessly. I have tried disabling the built in adapter and installing a Linksys USB one but the problem remains. The problem appears to be the laptop is failing to pick up an IP address wirelessly.
Any help appreciated.

Routers fine. I've just reinstalled XP and everything is fine now

Thanks for the advice. This was a clients PC and was freezing and full of Spy ware etc so a data backup and reinstall was the simplest way to fix the problem. I do agree though, by the time programmes, updates and drivers are all installed a reinstall can be a pain
