I have a Dell laptop that can connect to the Internet via Ethernet but cannot connect wirelessly. I have tried disabling the built in adapter and installing a Linksys USB one but the problem remains. The problem appears to be the laptop is failing to pick up an IP address wirelessly.
Any help appreciated.

U sure you configured your wireless router to assign DHCP addresses? If you tried that many different wireless adapters in your computer and they all fail I would go back and check your wireless router.

I'm glad you got your issues sorted out, but I see this all the time I just re-installed XP and its fine.

Most issues with Windows XP can be solved without having to fresh install the whole OS, yes installing Windows XP is pretty fast and easy but if you add in all the time it takes you to install the software configuring various devices email etc. Trying to spend some time to fix the problem might save you time and it also manages to keep your program the way they are now.

Also u just said you reinstalled windows, did you try a Windows repair? A Windows repair usually can fix all the problems with Windows whilst keeping all your installed programs etc still working see this link for some more information

As I said glad you got everything working.

Thanks for the advice. This was a clients PC and was freezing and full of Spy ware etc so a data backup and reinstall was the simplest way to fix the problem. I do agree though, by the time programmes, updates and drivers are all installed a reinstall can be a pain
