Back again with a friend having network issues, sorry for the long post....

Set up my friends wireless network (along with Virgin BB). Got it all working apart from one comp. The girl uses BT BB back home and has various programs assosiated with it are installed, as its a Vaio there are lots of sony program. There is one specifically for wireless networking.

The windows wireless said it couldnt work because another program was responsible for it (the sony one). Tried it, once is starts searching for networks, they appear in the windows one. I connected via windows and it connected. The problem is the wireless connection would drop minutes after every time (i was sitting next to router). All other laptops worked fine (via windows wireless connection thingy).

I thought if i uninstalled the sony one, windows wouldnt be blocked and it would revert back, wrong. Unistalled and windows says some program is still managing it - no sign of sonys network program and remaining BT software had nothing to do with wireless networking.

Finally restarted the computer, when in windows (whilst loading) a network icon appears at the bottom right. When i hovered the mouse over it, it said something like broadcomm network and the wireless icon was connected. After loading wireless drops and broadcomm icon disappears. Looked in program files and add/remove programs and cant see anything to do with broadcomm.

Any ideas? Tried the knowledge base article assosiated with this error, but the option you need to change was correct. Using XP
