Hi Guys...

Was wondering if anyone has any experience with going wireless? I have realised that one of the things that prevents me from running and moving around as much is my wire.

Have any of you used such systems and do you have any particular recommendations? How do the little "bugs" that stick in the jack output stack up against the full-on bodypacks?

Thanks :)

Not used one myself, but a guy in a band that supported us had one. During the soundcheck he was walking all round the pub and it wasn't breaking up at all so they definately have a good range.

I have one and its awesome, run out of battery now though.

its an audio-technica ATW-R200 and it goes miles. Well, my amp was in my bedroom and i walked to the end of the garden and my mate said it was still playing :)

Only problem is the frequency. Mines 173.8mhz, I think you want a UHF or something as not many things use that as they do the normal frequency. Something like that, I read it aaaages ago.

Don't be tempted by the cheaper end of the market, I've had some very bad experiences with cheap(er) wireless mic's in the theatre and find that they're usually false economy. (IMO of course)

Certainly as Pheonix suggests the UHF ones are generally better at reducing the risk of unwanted interference. And dont forget they need to be CE marked to comply with the relevant MPT regs, else they're not legal for use in the UK (A lot I've seen on the auction site are NOT licenseable in the UK)

Other than the fairly big expense (assuming you'll go for a good setup) there aren't really any drawbacks to wireless any more.

The only question is, do you really need it?

No - but then I don't really need a guitar either :) Just fancied one after seeing various idols skipping around on stage, without strings

I guess really what I'd be looking for would be between £100 and £200 - with switchable frequencies just in case of interferance.

Don't bother, please don't bother.
Unless you are going to spend some serious money on one (£1,000 plus) then it isn't worth it.
I've lost count of the amount of local bands who started off using wireless and then ditching them.
My own band used transmitters and the first thing I did when I joined them was to get rid of them and the sound became brilliant without.
I can't think of one local pub band that uses them anymore and that speaks volumes.
About two months ago our ex drummer bought his bass one for our bassist to use, telling us it was brilliant and as soon as he plugged in his sound went.
I can't stress how much these toys will ruin your sound unless you buy what the pro's have.
