Am at a friends trying to connect her pc to the net wirelessly.

She has a netgear DG834G router which she has succesfully connected her laptop to. She bought a wireless usb adaptor (netgear wg111v3) so she can connect her desktop too (running a cable is not an option)

Despite having spent 3 hours trying to get it connected we still cant. Have tried manually assigning settings and letting windows do its thing and also using the connect software that comes with the adaptor.

If we manually assign an ip then it connects to the router instantly but we get no internet.

if we use the 2 auto configs they both find the router and connect but wont assign a network address.

Its driving us nuts. Im sure its something simple we've missed but if you can help then please do

many thanks in advance

That's interesting, seems to me like you're IP and/or MAC Address is not enetered in the Router to allow access. So by entering the IP settings on the PC manually, such as Default Gateway, etc this should get you on to the Router.

I take it on the PC you have turned on (or have running) SSDP and UPnP services? Also, first time around, I find you need SSDP broadcast turned on within the Router. Once it has been detected by Windows, you can then disable this.

:)

thanks for the quick reply have solved it now tho, and i feel like a right pillock :( was entering the wep passphrase when it asked for it, when I actually needed to input the whole key. soon as i did it instantly connected and all was fine.
i now feel like a prize plum but thanks for taking the time to reply, its greatly appreciated
