Wireless issues

Hi,

I have just bought a new Vista laptop but for some reason I'm unable to connect to my wireless router. The network is found but when I try to connect it just says 'cannot connect to network'. I have my old PC upstairs with a wireless card in which works fine and I am able to connect to via a network cable on the laptop.

I have looked at the 'connectivity doctor' which is just showing the wireless LAN as disconnected and having some kind of comms issue. The wireless switch on the laptop is on and I've reset the ip address of the router. Still nothing works!!!! Does anyone have any ideas as I'm stumped. :confused:

Does your router have WEP or similar enabled, if that's the case then you need to get the WEP key for the connection.

Also, what make is your router?

It should have WEP enabled as it works with my PC with the wireless card - how do I go about checking this though? #the router is a basic netgear one, not sure of the model I'm afraid.

With Netopia, the one I use, there's an ip address ie 192.168.x.xxx which I can type into the address bar and access all the settings and stuff like WEP. Surely there must be something similar with your router where you can access the settings.

Once in there it should be relatively straight forward.

Robbed this off the netgear site:

1 Connect a computer to any one of the four LAN ports of the NETGEAR router.
2 Open an Internet explorer and type the router IP address which would be either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 (by default, refer to your product documentation ti determine the default IP address.) in the address bar and press Enter.
The Login window will be prompting for a Username and Password. The default Username is admin and the default Password is password
3 Click Wireless Settings under Setup menu.
