Wireless net converter

Ive got a laptop with wireless internet connection and want to use it.

Can someone point out to me, on OcUK site, something that I can plug into my desktop PC which will broadcast the wired net already connected to that desktop.

I dont think it is.

What i want is something i can plug into my already internet wired desktop that will broadcast net to my laptop.
I dont want all my computers wireless, just the laptop.
 
some wirless routers (of a decent quality) will have ethernet out aswell as in, so you take ethernet in, broadcast to the lappy, and then back out to the desktop (thats what i do anyway) your method would require that you leave your desktop on the whole time.

the other option is that your broadband modem might have two outs, or of course replace the modem with a wireless route / modem like the home hub

Or use the dongle method above

Do you think you could posat up a link to the dongles on OcUK? I cant find them.

However, the majority of them are aimed at multi-user business networks and are more expensive than home wireless routers. You might be able to get one at a reasonable price if you shop around or look for a second hand one.

You mean your laptop has a wireless NIC (network interface card). If you are perfectly happy with your current router, I would keep it and buy a standalone wireless access point.

This gives you a bit more flexibility as to where you locate your wireless AP. For example, if your router is downstaires with your PC, you could put the wireless AP upstaires to give you a greater range for your wireless network. You would still need to connect the wireless AP to your router using an ethernet cable, or you could do what I do (costs more), and thats buy a cheap Homeplug kit (I cant find any homeplug kits on OCUK, but you can google homeplug for more information on what they are).

I have a Thomson speedtouch 546 ADSL router which I have been very happy with for quite a few years now. I wanted to give internet access wirelessly to 2 laptops and 1 PC in the house, so I bought a Thomson speedtouch 180 wireless access point which has been absolutely fantastic - it was cheap to (£28, but you cant buy it no more :().

your desktoop pc must be getting onto the the internet somehow, is it cable, a sub modem, a router.

Tell us that and whoes your isp and and we can tell you the easisest and most econmmical way to get the laptop connected.

The route your asking about requires you to have the desktop on if you want to use the laptop
 
Yeh, my desktop is connected to the net via a cable, it goes through a Linksys cable router, this is so i can split the net to 2 (up to 4) different PC's. My laptop has the ability to connect to the net wireless'ly' (NIC).

My internet is from Virgin Cable so the net goes through the little grey box before going into my Linksys, there are no more ports on the little grey box.

So i either need something that will plug into my desktop (via USB) or something that plugs into the Linksys router (Via one of the empty Ethernet sockets) that will send of wireless signal.

The later being better as i would only need power to the Linksys router and not the desktop.

Im happy with my Linksys cable router and dont wish to have all my computer wireless.

Agreed, no point having more equipment than is necessary. A single wireless router like the Linksys will do the job just fine
 
I vote wireless router, though the access point will achieve the same thing.


You can definitely do it with a usb dongle, but the range sucks. Its also an absolute nightmare getting the damn thing working reliably, after a week or so trying to do it the way you first suggested I just bought a wireless router.
 
A dongle attached to the PC would be pretty pointless. M

Much more of a pain to set up, no cheaper really and the PC would need to be on all the time

Will the Wireless Linksys router plug into my existing Linksys wired router via ethernet slot?
Or are we saying to get a wireless Linksys that will also have Ethernet sockets on it? Can the wireless be turned of easyly?

I've never known a wireless router that doesn't have at least 4 ethernet sockets for wired conections. Just plug the wired computers into the Ethernet ports and use the wireless for the laptop! You can switch wireless off on the router setup pages, but I can't see why you'd want to do that.
