ok, just a couple of quick questions about setting up a wireless home network.

this is something i really dont know anything about, so any help offered is widely accepted and appreciated.

basically i want to setup a wireless home network, add my xbox to it, and play on xbox live. then, when my parents come round i will need to be able to allow their laptop access to the network, and the internet.

currently i have a usb modem (which came from the isp when i signed up), a wireless usb adaptor (for my pc) and a wireless adaptor fir the xbox.

i have been looking around, and get the impression i will need a new modem and a wireless router.

i then plug the modem into the phone line, the router into the modem and then i can connect my pc, xbox and any more devices to it?

i am really just looking for someone to confirm that i am understanding this correctly.

im not particularly keen on having the 2 pieces of equipment though, so am also wondering if i could buy an all-in-one that is a adsl modem + wireless router. any product recommendations would be great.

thanks for your time and help.

so this should do the trick?

oh, is any one of these manufacturers better/worse than the others, or is it a pretty close run match.
linksys
d-link
belkin
netgear

EDIT: or how about this one, would this be ok?

None of those makes are perfect, I'd avoid Belkin like the plague. That D-Link should do the job, but I can't guarantee reliability, most people would recommend Linksys over the others.

just been looking some more.

let me just clarify.

gateway - this is a modem and router?
broadband router - is simply a router that can handle the high speeds?

i think they are trying to confuse me by putting broadband in everything.

Broadband means it will route broadband, which includes DSL and Cable, yet does not include a modem. An ADSL gateway includes an ADSL modem, and is therefore what you want. I don't think they're trying to confuse you as you can get 56k and ISDN routers too.

so, (last one i think).

i need a linksys wireless adsl gateway.

this plugs into my phoneline (microfilter) and offers an always on internet connection?

i then use my usb adapter in my pc and wirelessly connecto to the gateway to access internet on my pc? and same goes for any other devices wanting to access internet.

if 2 or more devices are turned on at the same time i will be able to file share and the like?

thanks so much for your help.

EDIT: will an adsl2 modem work ok, or do i just need adsl?

Yep, Yep, Yep, and Yep.

I'm afraid I can't guarantee the reliability of any wireless router at this price level, but the Linksys should be fine.
