hi all, a mate of mine has just had NTL 10mb bb installed everything works fine on the main pc downstairs but we cant get the pc upstairs to connect to the internet, the upstairs computer connects to the router but wont connect to the internet.

any ideas ?

Ping the router, just to check. Make sure the DHCP on the router is switched on, and check all the wireless connection settings.

If WEP encryption is enabled, you need to change the key from the default and put it in the PC upstairs. If there's something wrong with the WEP encryption settings, the router will allow an association (ie. the system to connect) but won't assign an IP address or allow internet connections.

the dhcp is switched on and its showing the network as available from the upstairs computer but theres still no connection to the net, both the passphases are the same on router and pc but still nothing ?

are pretty much the same all packets were sent and recieved.

in that case its working
when you goto Internet Explorer and type in www.bbc.co.uk does it just timeout and say "page could not be displayed"? also do other programs i.e msn/yahoo or anything like that which uses the internet work?

Internet Explorer attempting to connect via a proxy? Check in tools/options/connection settings (I forget as I don't have IE) ... if not that, you definitely sure the working offline option is not ticked?

Merry Christmas.

My cousin has the exact same problem. Yesterday I installed a Wirless Router/ADSL modem in my grandparents house. I can browse the net find on my laptop but my cousins laptop isn't having any of it. It will successfully ping websites but IE and Firefox just can't seem to connect to any websites.

EDIT: Got it working. Disable your antivirus. Or if you have something called Bulldog antivirus just uninstall that crap. :p

theres no anti virus on the pc mate its a fresh install.its pinging sites ok but just not displaying the pages

Did you check what I suggested?

What about the Windows firewall? I've found it seems to like blocking sites (and IIRC it's enabled by default).

I'm getting a similar problem on my Wife's laptop which has a Netgear WPN111 wirless USB.
It will ping websites and has a good strong connection to the router and will connect to the other pcs via LAN , but will not display web pages.
I notice that when I type in an address in the address bar ,at the bottom it says :
Downloading from site :res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

I don't suppose this gives a clue??

As yuou can ping on the web address it is unlikely to be a DNS issue, have you tried to setup email if not try this and see if it works as if it does then you know the issue is related to IE if it does not work then the next thing I would look at is the firewall. If you are on XP then disable the firewall reboot and try again both email and browsing.
