Wireless Problem

Hi guys.

Since last night I've had an odd problem with my desktop - random wireless connectivity. When connected, it frequently drops the connection. Sometimes, though, it won't even connect at all, other times it reports its connected but I have no connectivty. Right clicking properties shows the Router has not assigned an IP address.

Sometimes Windows tells me it isn't connected, and even has the not connected icon in the taskbar yet.... it is connected and the internet works. It's all very bizarre.

See here, it's telling me I'm not connected and that I am connected at the same time

It only started last night and it's been otherwise perfect. Every other machine in the house, also on wireless, still works perfectly. My laptop, put in the same place as my desktop, also works perfectly.

I've so far tried reinstalling the card and also swapping the card out with a known good card from another machine - didn't cure the problem.

Anyone got any ideas? From the way Windows reports the problems I think it may be a Windows issue rather than a problem with the wireless network.

Thanks!

It always amazes me in this particular area of the forums that if I posted LOL OMG VIRGIN SUX I CANT DOWNLOAD *** ILLEGAL FILEZZZZZ I'd get 6 pages of replies, yet technical queries, nobody knows.. :(

It's semi working now although it disconnects and reconnects every 5-10 minutes.

As you've suggested, if it's persisting with a different card (which presumably uses different drivers), it sounds like a Windows problem - and I'd expect the disconnections and the wonky reporting are connected.
Have you tried the OEM wireless app rather than Windows Zero Config?

Between two minutes to one in the morning and nineteen minutes to eleven on Remembrance Sunday?

VM has 3.5M customers in the UK, so it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that any threads on capping/shaping/T&C changes are going to attract a good number of the GD crew - 6 pages of mindless crap in every thread with a technical question wouldn't be any better than nothing at all...

It's now just degenerated to disconnecting and immediatly reconnecting every 5-10 minutes or so. I'm using Linksys wireless cards and a Speedtouch 580i router. It also does it with the OEM software :(

Hmm that is indeed a strange one, what anti-virus, firewalls you running fox?

Could be something nasty on your pc, that is affecting a firewall etc

Just a few pointers >

Can you ping 127.0.0.1?

If that doesn't work then it's a problem with your TCP/IP setup.

The try PINGing 212.58.226.232 (www.bbc.co.uk) if you can ping the IP but not the URL, then its a resolver issue.

Can you PINg the router (dft gateway)?

Fox, i had this problem in the past with Linksys Wireless Adapters. Is it a PCI adapter?
