Electric hobs have been like this for ages, they use electromagnetic induction.
thats very very close though, and not on this scale, it's just so that they don;t electrocute you.

Alternators also use the same principal on a much larger scale.
But not over any kind of range though, and not with people walking in between the wires.
And don't alternates use permanent magnets and coils not an electric current?

Does anyone else find powering a fridge like this just totally pointless? I mean, at what point have you been concerned with how your fridge is powered, its not like you move it around lots is it. You just plug it in and leave it alone
