hi all,

I am having NTL 10meg installed on the 8th March :D but I need a wireless router for it. The budget will be an absolute max of £80ish maybe more, im not sure how much i should be looking at for one! I have currently got a netgear ADSL modem/router and its great! no problems what so ever.

Is it possible to get a modem and router in 1 for a cable connection? As I prefer not to have the cable modem plugged in, then being plugged into a router. But I am not too bothered if I have to do it that way, but it is easier for me not to have it that way lol.

I would prefer one that comes with a wireless dongle but it isnt essential.

It needs to be wireless, and a good stable router :)

Thanks in advance.

Need to know anything else then let me know

you need NTL's modem as it has fibre connection coming in to it.

Ive tried the netgear 624GT and there not too bad once youv updated the firmware :)

Nope. Coax. You do need to keep the modem though.

Linksys WRT54G/GS is another option, provided you don't get the brain-damaged later versions. Search is your friend.

I did do a search but didnt find much, i never seem to, must be using wrong words...

edit: I would like one with QOS also if thats possible? As people on the network like to download a lot and I game, so it doesnt mix :D

Linksys as tolien mentioned - I'm not sure if the standard firmware has QoS, but the third-party one definitely do (I recommend dd-wrt)

Check out LinksysInfo for serial numbers to check for - avoid V5 54G's and V4 54GS's and all the lovely firmwares available for this superb bit of kit

Think I just got the v4 one from OcUK the other day. Has installed fine on my NTL though I only use a few desktops so probably won't tell what all the fuss is about. :o

im after a wireless router for my Telewest connection too, do all the wireless ones on OCuK work with Cable connections? or just the few you guys have mentioned.

thanks

All the wireless routers will work, just connect your telewest/ntl modem into the ethernet port of the router.
Just make sure you dont got a adsl router with built in modem as already stated you've got to use the ntl/telewest modem as its cable.

Can an adsl router be used with cable if you just plug the ethernet from the cable modem into it?

No, because there's no ethernet WAN port to connect the cable modem to.

Any real reason not to get the v4 54GS'? Ive picked one up recently as I didnt think Id find the v3s and below easily - since it uses Linux, does it really matter it has less RAM/Flash than the older models?

I didnt think dd-wrt took up that much space - right?

ps3ud0

Sorry to hijack the thread :o

So whereas i was trying to set up a Linksys WAG54G with cable, I need a Linksys WRT54G?

Sorry - yup, the V4 'GS still uses Linux, but it is the same as the V4 and lower of the 'G, so no advantage of RAM and ROM :(

There will be no problems running the third party firmwares - but you will prolly find you have to use the 'G firmware for it (could be wrong, there is too much info to speed read it) :)

quick question, how can you tell what version the WRT54GS are?

Dunno where my box (probably buried under an old monitor), but it does say on the bottom of the device itself.
Not much good if you're looking in a shop though.
