Before I explain my question i'll quickly give a rundown of the anatomy of my network and devices.
I have Virgin Broadband 50mb, the modem connected to a WNR3500 Netgear router(supports both 2.4Ghz and 5ghz and is a gigabit switch).
My main computer plugs directly into the Netgear WNR3500 by ethernet as does my 360.
My laptop is Wireless N enabled and is normally in the same room as the Netgear router downstairs.
Now upstairs, I have a Wireless N D-Link router which acts as a bridge from the Netgear router, my server is connected by cable into this D-Link router.
Okay so the question/problem.
Recently my wireless and wired connections keeps dropping. The internet will be unavailable for about 5 minutes and sometimes I cannot access the server upstairs at all. Often switching off the Netgear router off then on solves this(making me think its not the D-Link router or internet connection).
So i've decided to replace the Netgear with an Asus RT-N56U Black Diamond dual band router. However, it like my Netgear has both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz throughput, i'm not sure which one i'll need to use?
I've been told i could hook up my Netgear and have 2 routers downstairs, the Asus for 5Ghz and the Netgear for 2.4Ghz... but thats confused me even more. I just want the best performance up to the server but also for a reliable connection for the devices beside the router?
-EDIT-
I've also been told I should allow the routers to allow "Roaming" so if i'm upstairs the computer will connect to the stronger signal from the other router. I have no idea how to do that. Didn't even know it was possible.
I'm using a D-Link router upstairs also because I assume using a Router as a wireless bridge with WR-RT(Can't remember the custom firmware name) in theory is stronger than any USB adapter(plus can move it nearer to the door to essentially remove a brick wall)
