Greetings,

Has anyone come across this before: I'm sending a file across my network at home and the transfer speed is so slow! Its taking over 200mins just to send a 1GB file. Could it be the encryption on the network as It's set to WEP 128bit, using Shared Key for Authentication. The network is wireless 11mbit.

could be a weak signal or interference?

Signal is full strength. I've had this problem even when its connected into the router via LAN cable. I seem to remember there is a fix just cant remember.

Even at 1.1MBps it should be taking no longer than 15 minutes.
Don't forget the quoted speed for wireless is the total for both directions so the absolute maximum is .55MBps on 802.11b. In reality you're lucky to get half that so around 250KBps. Still should do it in an hour though.

Check that your wired connections are either auto-negotiating or set to full duplex. You'll find this in the properties of the network card. An incorrect duplex setting can cause major speed problems.

Hi,

If you get someone to bring their laptop round any try a copy do you get the same results ? (also try wireless downloading from the internet on their laptop and compare it to your original results.

If they are the same speed then it suggests a problem with your router, If the laptop brought round to test is faster then the problem is with your original PC/Laptop. You need to work out where the slowness is coming from to solve the problem.

Hope that helps,

Thanks guys for the input.

I have manually set the duplex on the PC which isn't connected via wireless to 100MBPS FULL Duplex which I hope is right?

The Wireless router has authentication set to "Open" instead of "Shared" and I'm still getting very slow data transfer between he two PC's.

The wireless laptop will download from he net at 400kb/sec which is good for my connection, when sending the files between the two computers I am not downloading from the net though :)

My problem is exactly the same as this guys here: Slow network transfer

Do I need netBIOS, I just have the following in my network properties on the PC.

TCIP
LINK Layer Topology Discover ( Got no idea what this is).
File and Print
Client for MS Networks
