New to wireless so bare with me. I have a 54Mbps connection on my laptop connected to a Netgear DG834GT, set to auto 108Mbps.

My question is why can't I transfer files from my desktop at more then 50% of the 54Mbps (info taken from task manager on laptop)?

I have enabled "Throughput Enhancement", anything else I can try or is this normal? Laptop is also set to high performance and plugged into mains.

I beleive its simply because nothing ever runs at its full potential really. To get 54mbps youd have to have a top quality wire which is very short etc. There may be ways to make it run faster but i doubt youll ever get the full 54

Are you saying that if I was closer to my router then I might get faster speeds? The signal at the moment is "Excellent" according to Vista.

27Mbps (which would be 50%) is about the most you'll ever get.
The router doing super-G is irrelevant because the laptop can only do 54Mbps. The router might as well only be 54Mbps.

While you might get a bit better transfer what im saying is. Only in absolute perfect conditions could you get 54mb and that is something you will never achive so expect only 50% of it to be normal.
