Problem: my PC is NHS property, and I'm looking for extra 'permanent' storage as I don't want to tamper with the PC. A NAS / file server is the obvious solution, but I was wondering if wireless USB have kicked off yet? The idea I think is that wireless USB would come as a pair of antennas - a dongle for the PC, and another for the peripheral. In my case, a USB 3.0 powered external hard disk. When I look online for "wireless USB", I'm just finding wifi dongles, so I'm probably using the wrong search terms.

Another option is the new Raspberry Pi 2 I received this week. Think that can be used as a file server, although it is very technical as it involves using SSH.

Wireless USB been take off since 2010 but nowday it is slow. I would suggest you to look at Wifi portable hard drive like WD 2TB My Passport Wireless hard drive that accept both Wifi and USB 3.0, it has build in battery and can be plug in wall socket.

Ahhhhh, I've never heard of wifi drives, so I'm glad I asked. Thanks!! I guess it works via the router over ethernet then. Does the computer see it as a drive letter or a network share? It's definitely what I'm after though :-)

I checked WD manual online, said the computer wont see it as a drive letter so it will see as wifi network, you can turn it as network share and DLNA.
