Hi guys,

my firstborn is due in August and I'd like to be able to set up a wireless (preferably) webcam in the nursery and monitor it on my (as yet unbuilt) HTPC downstairs. Is this possible? If so, do you guys recommend any cameras? Budget is fairly restricted to between £100 and £15 max (ish).

Cheers,

Jed.

Hi Jed Shields

My firstborn is also due in August, and I am also building an HTPC! Wasn't planning on a web cam, but it is certainly possible. You want an IP camera, and then with the proper config this can be viewed from any web browser. Wired are cheaper than wireless, but then you need a cable running to your router.

I got a cheap wired one of fleabay, and it works okay. Might hook it up to a wireless access point in the future.

Personally I wouldn't expose my newborn to a radio transmitter.

Is it any worse than a standard plug in audio baby monitor?

melbourne - looks like the race is on ;)

My search was limited due to the fact that I want it wireless - routing cables all over the house is a definate no. However, I hadn't though of using a wireless extender ... that might open up the list a bit.

Just found something ideal but OC don't sell it and I don't think I can post a link to a competitor ...

Search for Securaz 860Q - it's a wireless camera with full tilt / zoom / microphone and night vision capability plus a portable monitor unit. It's also got a video out connection, so you could still hook it up to your PC if you want to.
