Wireless woes. Shall I use those powerline things?

Evening all,

My HTPC is located in one room, my wireless router in another.

I'm using a Netgear Wireless N USB dongle (this one http://support.netgear.com/product/WNDA3100v2) and the signal is appalling (I get 2 out of the 5 bars, never any more).

I'd like ideally to connect the two physically but there's no actual way I can do this without running a cable all the way up into the loft, and all the way back down again. As I live in rented accommodation, this isn't possible.

I've played with the dongle and it's settings, I just can't get it to go any quicker. One of those things I guess. Wireless, meh.

So, I was looking into those devices that you plug into the wall to use the house circuitry. Does anyone have any experience with using these? If so, what model are you using and what's it like? Any particular brands that I should look into or avoid?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Cheers

David

They are good piece of kit.

But I would ditch the homehub and buy a decent router and maybe a decent wireless receiver with an antenna.. PCI-E maybe?

The power-line really depends on how good the wiring is in the house, but you can get good results.

Thanks for the replies.

I could try another router, though this would push the price up plus the additional cost of a receiver. After all that the signal might still be poor?

For the price of the Powerlines, they're worth a punt.

If it were my house, I'd cat5 the lot but unfortunately that's not the case. The Powerline stuff seems to get decent reviews, although (and much like wireless) it can be a bit hit and miss.

The 200Mbs TP link kit I tried got about 60Mbs (7.5MB/s) throughput - which I suspect will be plenty for your needs.

Powerlines are beautiful, especially (in my experience) as an alternative to Wireless. Solid connections speeds, no drop-outs, and a high bit-rate.

+1 for Powerline adaptors

I 3rd this, got some here which ive been using for 2 years, wonderful bit of kit and recommend them to anyone.

I do have the ocuk cheap ones and have been rock solid.
