Wireless - won't connect up close range!

Got a Netgear D834G and an intel pro wireless 10/100 integrated card in my laptop. Laptop won't connect if closer than 50cm to the router (on my desk, where the router is based).

If I move it further away from the router (say 100 to 150 cm) it connects.

What can this be?

Signal strength too high for the network card to handle.

The funny thing is that I was using a Netgear wireless PCMCIA card on my old laptop, which connected fine at the same location. Now I'm using an integrated Intel Pro Wireless card, which is giving me this problem. (I sold the old PCMCIA card b.t.w.).
