Wiring Existing Home For Network

and heres me thinking i'll just plug in a cable to my router downstairs and run it up to a 4 port switch next to my computer.... you guys are next level :) thanks for the suggestions.

I haven't made up my own network cable in about 15 years lol

thanks for the info!

No worries, the solid core network cable actually punches down directly into the back of the patch panel and rear of the network socket faceplates or modules using a Krone tool. My advice would be to put the patch panel in a cupboard upstairs where it's cool and ventilated rather than the loft, in case you want more network ports at a later date and want to have a network switch located next to the patch panel. You'd still route cables through the loft though as that is the easiest way to drop them down to the room(s) beneath.

No need to make up any cables as the stranded patch cables to use for jumpering the ports on the patch panel and connecting devices to the network wall sockets can be bought pre fitted with rj45's in cable lengths ranging from about 25cm long and upwards. They can also be cheaper and more reliable to buy them premade. Just make sure any cable you buy is made with pure copper and not copper clad aluminium (CCA).

I've been wanting to get the loft fitted with mains electrics and network points so that I could relocate my servers up there and save space downstairs. This thread has re-inspired me to get this done.

I'll have to see how the electrician proposes to get mains electrics up to the loft and see if I can use the same route for network cabling. Would it be worth getting Cat5e shielded cable from Netstoredirect? I need to see whether I can find an internal route from the basement bedroom I'm in to the loft or whether it'd be easier to run some external Cat5e up the outside wall to the loft. If I can find a place to drill a hole through the wall/window frame then that might be a lot easier than looking for a route in a terraced house.
