Hi All,

Just after a few tip for wiring CCTV cameras, im using conventional dome camera's using Ethernet cable with BNC baluns at either end. My question is more of using a junction box to house the wiring externally. Whats regarded as best practice for this, ive seen the camera's directly fixed to the top of the junction box on a couple of installations, is this the right way of doing this? Or should you mount the junction box to the side of the camera?

Thanks folks

You can do either, but depending on the height of the camera you'll probably want to mount it on the junction box so that cables can't be cut.

Depends on the type of camera, mounting on the box is pretty naff. Does the camera housing have a 20/25mm conduit fitting on the site of it? Or just a notch for the cable to go out of? Does the cable come through the wall into the back of the box, or is it clipped along and then into the box through a gland?

You want IPx4 or better for your junction boxes. You can fit a balun in a 30mm hole so you can always drill in to the back of the camera and leave the balun in the hole and silicone round the camera.

I fit genie dome cameras and try and run all cables hidden, the older genies had the connections in the actual dome, newer ones don't so I try to get the cable inside the building and mount the camera directly to the wall, will try and get some pics of mine on my house to show.

The only time i've seen cameras mounted on ip boxes is when they've been installed by less than reputable people. My mate runs his own security company and he wouldn't even entertain the idea of mounting on a box, it looks nasty in his eyes, and have to say I agree, what kind of cameras are you fitting?
