Hey guys

ive just started playing the witcher 2 with the 6950 2gb card at 1920x1080 res .

what sort of settings should i be able to run at as it recommended the one down from highest, however it doesnt run extremely smoothly so have to adjust bits.

i have a q6600 2.4 processor and 4gb ram (both about 4 years old if not more), would upgrading these components see a noticeable increase in fps of the current games?

thanks for any advice given, it is extremely playable on the current settings just want to get the best out of the card.

cheers!

I think you should overclock the CPU a little if you can, I have the same card at the same res. I can run the game maxed out with uber-sampling disabled.

EDIT: my 6950 is unlocked but that shouldnt make a huge difference

You should be able to pretty much max the settings other than Ubersampling which even GTX580's struggle with. To run with Ubersampling enabled you'd probably need xfire or sli'd high end cards.

edit/ sorry, I missed your standard clocked Q6600, you really need to overclock it to get the most out of the 6950, 3ghz+ should be easily achievable. Is it B3 or G0 stepping?

i have the go stepping version

i have tried looking into overclocking it before but never got far as i dont really know what im doing and the guides online only helped me soo far.

also my motherboard is apparently not too good for overclocking (asus p5ne-sli (or something like that)).

yea it automatically had all settings on high except ubersampling but still felt jerky and not the best fps, playable but not smooth if that makes sense!

so upping the processor will help? i wouldnt mind upgrading with a motherboard/cpu/ram bundle but unsure if i need to now

thanks for any advice

You should be able to get some sort of overclock with your current board. It's as simple as entering bios and checking menus until you find frontside bus adjustments, Q6600 is 266 x 9 by default giving 2.4Ghz, the multiplier is locked so to overclock you just increase the FSB.

Before you make any bios adjustments download cpuz and check the vid (vcore or voltage) of your processor. If it's a low one then you may have a very good clocker on your hands, but even the higher vid processors will still usually clock well.

Make sure your ram is set to default speeds and timings, and then just increase fsb, 300fsb should be fine without any vcore increase so try that initially, you could run a stability test such as prime 95 or alternatively run a game for a while. If all is well just keep increasing fsb until system becomes flakey, when it does you'll have to increase vcore, this will obviously increase temps so keep an eye on them via 'Real Temp' (free to download).

Only minor vcore increase should be necessary to get to 3.0-3.2 ghz, if you need to significantly bump vcore then you should look into upgrading system cooling if you're using just the stock intel heatsink and fan.

Have a tweak and just ask if you get stuck, plenty of people in here and the cpu/overclocking sections will help if need be. You never know you may get some significant performance gain without spending a dime.

thanks! i will give it another go then :)

i did get it running at around 3ghz before but crashed almost right away but i didnt adjust the vcore etc

so on my bios it has QDR instead of FSB i think cant remember, so do i make that 300? or does it convert somehow?

thanks!

Not sure about QDR, I don't have that setting on my boards, it stands for Quad data rate. It could be the base clock, if so, you'd have to multiply it by 4 for actual frontside bus, what is it currently set to? (defaults)

Sorry whats that refferring to arc? Me = n00b! :)

Ill check what its set to, all i remember from when i tried before is that i had to ip the Qdr to increase the ghz of the processor, ill check after work :)! So i need to unlink the ram too?

Kinger, from reading around it seems you'll have problems getting a decent overclock using that motherboard, the 650i chipset it consists of is pretty poor for quad core overclocking, Quad core overclocking didn't really take off until the Intel P35 chipset was released, you can pick up P35 boards on ebay cheaply, I'd look into that.

I've got 2 P35 mobo's and both of my Quads run at 3.5, they're very easy to work with and overclock.

This thread may help some if you decide to persevere with the P5NE.

There is a pencil mod to improve vdroop (voltage fluctuation) which is detailed here.

Yea i thought the motherboard was the problem! I had a look and people seem to struggle getting quads to 2.8/3.00ghz! So maybe i should just upgrade? Or will getting a better motherboard but same processor be worth doing?

Thanks for the links!

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R

That ones apparently a lot better for o/c will have a quick look on ebay, so would 3.2-3.4ghz on the 6600 make a noticeable difference in games?

Cheers!

Yes it would indeed, If you go for a P35 or P45 board there's no reason why you shouldn't manage 3.0ghz, but quite likely you'll get a fair bit more, it'll feel like a new system if you can get 3.2+ which i'm confident with the right board you can.
That Gigabyte should do the trick, also keep an eye out for Asus P5K boards, the premium and Deluxe versions have a pretty good track record with overclocking of Quad core Cpu's.

Thanks a lot :) i will try current mobo too but will look into buying one of these better ones! Shall i look for new ir us 2nd hand the only way for these boards? If so can i buy with confidence or should i look out fot certain things? Thanks

Also what sort of price is a p5k deluxe worth? £50ish? On ebay now ha!

I use to have my Q6600 on a 650i chipset board and was struggling quite a lot fo get the overclock stable beyond 3.0GHz. After moving to a 2nd hand P5Q Deluxe, my Q6600 easily overclocked to 3.6GHz stable...but it does require quite high vcore.

In my opinion, if you do not already have a decent CPU cooler, or can't find a P45 board for dirt cheap, you'd be better off upgrading to i3 2100 platform instead and sell off the Q6600 and DDR2 rams.

While the i3 2100 won't be able to overclock, it is faster than the Q6600 at 3.6GHz not only in games that use 4 cores such as BFBC2, but it will outperform the Q6600 at 3.6GHz by a huge margin in games that use less than 4 cores (my 5850 would get bottleneck by the Q6600 at 3.6GHz in CPU demanding scenes in games that don't use all 4 cores). Also not only the i3 2100 will be much cooler running (perfectly fine to use the stock cooler) than a Q6600 overclocked to 3.6GHz, but its power consumption is around half of Q6600 at 3.6GHz at max loud (i3 2100 max power consumption is 65W, whereas my Q6600 3.6GHz at 100% load the power consumption will go above 120W). Not only that, unlike socket 775 being already a deadend socket, a 1155 board would mean you can still upgrade to faster CPU in the future.

if you overclock your cpu to 3ghz+ you should see a nice peformance increase otherwise the q6600 is just acting as a bottleneck for your card, i know its annoying m8 but its true :-/

You'd struggle to get sckt 775 boards new now, if you google around there are a few available but they seem to be mainly P43 chipset boards which I don't think clock as well as the P35/P45's.

Ebay has P5K boards come up quite often, there's a P5K Deluxe on there now for £55. Gigabyte DS3 range also comes up on ebay reguarly, haven't used one myself but they've got a good reputation for overclocking quads.

Of course, if you've got the cash you could upgrade to a Sandybridge 2500K, Z68 or P67 board, and 4-8 gig of DDR3 for around £300, probably less if you shop around.

Something like this would be good.

would that be any good? may just spend more to future proof as im gunna want a good set up come bf3 anyways

Yes, that would be very high performing, but as gaming seems to be your main concern then you could just buy a 2500K, Z68 board and 8 gig of ram seperately, which would be as future proofed and would likely clock well above 4ghz, you could probably save around £200 over the price of the bundle with seperates, which would get you one of the latest SSD's or another 6950 for crossfire.
