Witcher 3 fans should play The Witcher 1 & 2

Got half way into Witcher 1 and stopped for some reason years ago. I probably should get into it again but that first act where fight off the pack of dogs and if you die you had to go through the cut scene again was highly annoying and I don't think I want to put myself through that again lol

The camera controls and combat. Every now and then I try to play it again because of the reputation of its story but I get annoyed and stop :D

Hmm, I had no issues with camera. Were you using OTS (Over the shoulder) mode? It works like any other third person game. As for combat, it is acquired taste :). It uses former Neverwinter Nights engine so that's why it is not as directly controlled as in the sequels. But once more combos and signs are unlocked, it can get really spectacular looking. Never really gets too hard though.

aha! thank you kind sir.

Yeah I went back and opted for that option. It's just been buried and I need to "sit and wait" to see if it develops into a lumpkin (I think its called now) but I've turned it off and will do that tomorrow.

I can see something going horribly horribly wrong.

Is there an easy way to get food to heal or regain health another way in this game? All the in game menus are quite daunting to a newbie.

I have plenty of food from picking up loot, killing wolves, destroying beehives..
Then I guess you haven't yet crafted Swallow potion? It restores large portion of your health and you can replenish the potions every time you medidate, even just by one hour. All you need is some alcohol. If you have the ingame hints enabled, they take you step by step through all the menus, so just turn on the brain and reading comprehension and go through it, soon you will be crafting and repairing and disassembling like there's no tomorrow :D

Firstly, what the hell is an ARPG? Whats with all these new acronyms and subcategories, what happened to it just being a good old RPG?

Lol. The irony here is that I didn't know what an ARPG is either when I made this topic and just wanted to use 'RPG' but thought some smart ass was going to call me out.

I tried to record some gameplay with Shadowplay but the video came out choppy whenever there was movement. Not sure whether G-Sync or 100hz affected this. I used more than an adequate bit rate before anyone asks.

I wanted to show that with a few mods the game is actually very good looking in places. People really should check out the screenshots I posted. The outside areas look gorgeous.

Witcher games are ok, gameplay is very repetitive though. I guess if you are a Witcher 3 fan than fair enough,

But if you're going to try an older rpg and haven't played Morrowind....well there hasn't been a better rpg since imo,

Game play in 1 and 2 is awful though. Unless your a nerd into the story the games are pants. 3 is way better but still falls woefully short.

I would have to disagree with this.

W3 is definitely more polished in terms of gameplay and graphics. However the storyline in W1 and W2 is just as good. I would even argue that the storyline is grittier in the first game, they've smoothed some of this out for 2 & 3 for the console generation to make it more approachable.

The biggest barrier to W1 is the controls. I hated them at first but once you get used to how they work, then it really isn't an issue.

The second issue is that it's really hard, which puts people off. It's not difficult in terms of killing enemies but how to solve quests. There are a lot of gamers out there who just want to progress without too much challenge.

I still think W1 has a lot to offer in terms of storyline and gameplay. It's definitely the most adult RPG i've played

W2 was good for it's time but W3 is essentially the same game, just bigger and better in every sense :D

W3 was good fun for a while but quickly becomes a chore with endless repetitive quests and useless loot. 80% of your time is spent skipping dialogue or visiting ? with a level 2 bronze sword reward. :p Plus there are hardly any dungeons.

Should be careful with that logic ,OP. I found the combat in the 1st Witcher to be appalling and the 2nd held my attention for less than an hour. As a result I've never been remotely interested in playing the 3rd.

On a more personal note, aside from the overly fussy combat system and the lack of a band of idiots following me around, my main beef with The Witcher is that the world and its lore has never really sparked any interest in me. This is odd, as I do love Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age and even Skyrim.

The third is an absolute must play. Don't let your experience in the first two games influence that. Even my brother played and completed Witcher 3 after I insisted. He's the sort of guy who never ever plays RPGs and just plays Call of Duty every night on his PS4.

I've played a lot of RPGs, including the main ones like Dragon Age, Skyrim, Diablo, Zelda etc. and am huge fan of Dragon Age in particular, but no RPG even comes close to The Witcher 3 in terms of dialogue and questing, which make up 70% of these games. The small and inconsequential quests that are such a bore in pretty much ever other series, are downright fascinating in The Witcher 3.

Witcher 3 is a good game, but i'd argue it's lackluster as rpg's go . You play a specific character that you can make no meaningful changes to.

The net effect of your decisions are token at best, in most cases just affecting the quest reward amount

The lack of first person also detracts from the experience, constantly peering over Geralts shoulder serves to remind it's his story, not yours

For me an rpg should allow you to replay the game in an entirely different way. Baldurs gate is good example of this, you can create your own character and proficencies, and then add party members to complement your playstyle. Each playthough will be entirely different.

The Witcher is very much 'on rails' in this respect. I'd say it's closer to Tomb Raider or Assasins Creed, kind of a hybrid action adventure game with some light rpg elements thrown in

They are worth playing given the updates they got, and the mods available. They were both good, but also definitely both a slog at times. I do actually wish they would go back and use the witcher 3 engine and everything they have made to create a witcher prime game with all 3 of the games rolled into a single title with the same level of fidelity.

Witcher 1 - combat was awful so gave up part way through, Witcher 2 was good however with the story and content making up for the improved but still woeful combat. Witcher 3, well nearly 500 hours so yeah, love it :)

It's been a while since my last attempt but yes, over the shoulder I think. I just have vague recollections of movement being clunky and even the intro combat being made difficult by it.

Out of the "main ones" you've listed I'd say none of them are particularly strong on story line except Dragon Age (assuming you mean 1) in the sense of dialogue/questing.

Baldur's Gate 2 is still the main PC RPG for story line and questing for me. Planescape obviously is another major one for story.
