wow, i just did my first expedition (failed) cos i found a chest near the shipwreck, opened it and got zapped by something, dead before I even knew it. Mad game

I've only just started playing this game last week, totally late to the party but what an amazing find.

A really well polished game that puts plenty of AAA titles to shame and an absolute blast to play. Looks amazing and the art style is top notch.

Hard in places, and some times a steep learning curve, but the gameplay is excellent.

The help system could be a little better though, as I've found myself watching a few help videos to get a better understanding, which in itself is an eye opener to how deep certain aspects of this game are, and prompted me to stick with it.

I'm at level 34, and just opened up my third travel point.

You aren’t late for anything, it’s early access.

I'm at level 43 now, and the game is really starting to open up. Difficulty is related to what level Gnosis you open up, I'm at level 2. It's quite challenging but also rewarding even when get defeated, as you learn something each time and the game doesn't cheat or spam you. And you do get the chance to return for your loot/items. That in itself can be a tense dash across the map to make that happen :D

I just can't seem to complete a calamity. I get shafted from every angle when it kicks off but I know the rewards are greater. Level 22 and Gnosis 1 only :(

edit: the sniper helps massively with enemies from afar.

The less damage you take the less likely there will be a calamity, so if your trip through the map isnt going well, its probably best to return to base then return for another go. I've had a few calamities, some I run for my life, others I've stood and fought, and yes I've died enough times! Angelus is a great gun, all round useful and good when levelled up. I've found the Echo shotgun very handy early on for pummelling enemies at close range, especially up a level and setting them on fire. The frost spell is also handy to stop enemies in their tracks while you get a second to gather yourself, and blast them into pieces.

I'm currently having a blast with Striga, gained at Gnosis 2. Its great for impaling enemies to walls :D

Calamities can be tough early on, later, you will find yourself triggering them for the rewards. Early on you tend to trigger a calamity whilst you are already fighting a camp, which adds to the difficulty. Accidentally triggering a Galeon calamity while you are deep in the Irongate castle vault is always fun :)

There is an item for sale at the trader, the Broken mirror, that triggers a calamity and double it's rewards, this allows you to trigger a calamity on your terms, making them easier to do, resetting the calamity counter and usually dropping a few feathers to add some more Arcana on your run.
Pick a nice spot you have already cleared to trigger it. On Irongate castle for instance, I'll usually clear this area, then return to it to trigger a calamity once the meter is on four.

Oh, one other thing that I did not really exploit way back when I first picked this up is maintaining Focus and hitting Soul Sigils to stun enemies. I know trying to not getting hit is a pretty obvious thing in any game, but it's doubly important in Witchfire.
It's also why I almost always use Monkshood as my Fetish, it makes retaining Foucs much easier.
