Gotta say, it took me a few levels before I bothered looking at the inventory, and how to cash in the crystals :D

I've currently dragged myself to level 50, and I'm either not that good, or I'm just not good enough yet (take your pick), as I'm finding further progression a proper challenge, even though I know there is lots more game ahead of me.

I sort of cheated, and dragged my save file to a safe location, then upgraded and dipped a toe in the next Gnosis level up..... Great to have all the new gear, the options opened up, and a new map.....But I was dying in minutes, badly :( So gave up went back to my old save, and I'm now tying to level up at Gnosis 2 which is slightly more manageable.

Still having fun though, go figure. :p

Just the layout of the camps can have a significant effect on the difficulty in a map, so sometimes, just levelling up to shuffle those around, can make a map a little easier (or harder of course).
I had the opposite the first time I went to Irongate Castle back when that was the "final" and most difficult map & there were 4 Gnosis levels - I'd seen people getting absolutely wrecked and expected the same thing, but I comfortably cleared all the camps and wondered what all the fuss was about.
Then I levelled up, the camps, traps and events got shuffled and suddenly I was getting rinsed :)

Was going to wait until the game hits 1.0, but so many people saying how good it is I feel I need to load it up myself and give it a spin.

Play the game how you want to, want to up the difficulty then increase gnosis.
Theres tonnes of synergy with spells, weapons, gear in the game , experiment at your own pace.
Ranking up weapons and skills that yopu like or form your build is super important.
I wouldnt up the gnosis until your easily clearing runs.

I was playing last night, and the game can quite easily hand me my ass at Gnosis 2. But I'm getting levelled up, weapons are levelling up and opening up new things and weapon/spell tactics.

I unlocked my first fetish also, out of the blue found it hiding in the map.

It really is good fun, and I think the challenge is what keeps you engaged.

Got most guns to level 2 but need level 3 enchantment or whatever it's called. I can't seem to go higher, even killing warden etc on some maps only drops level 2 papers not 3s. Frustrating.

Still Gnosis 2 myself, but I have managed to gain a couple of level 3 papers. I've got Striga to level 3, and I can't remember the name, but the heavy spell lightening cross.

Once gnosis 4 is unlocked you can use the mirror to research and buy the third incantations you need.
Items only level up to level 3 but each level is a powerful upgrade that make a big difference.

Game really is quite good, had a good couple of sessions and unlocked two new maps. Only unlocked Gnosis 1, but that's given me access to a vault....which I bailed out on. Currently Lv25 and wondering if I should carry on, or wait for v1.0, really don't want to spoil the game.

I finally got Gnosis 1 unlocked, for some reason I really struggled with the first vault\cave and just couldn't complete it. Tried again this morning and even though I only had one health vile left I manged to do it. I think as there was a timer I rushed it, but slowed down and took a bit of time and so happy I got it done :D

yeah that first vault is a learning curve cos I didn't know the green glow was madness inducing. Watched a YT clip on how to avoid it.

The first vault is actually one of the hardest, many veteran players regularly wonder why its so hard for the first map and also why they have the tower in the first map too as again its hard enough until you gear and level up.Ive seen people quit the game thinking they should be beating the tower before they move on, then when they cant they think the game is too hard but infact its they are under geared and under levelled.
Just avoid the Tower until your up for it, its easy to see why they locked in behind gnosis levels , you DO NOT ned and should not complete it before unlocking more maps.
Nice weapon reward once you do complete it but again dont rush to it.
Unlocking new maps and leveling up weapons/gear should be your focus.

I'm at a level now where I can easily wonder around the first two areas without too much stress, although a bad run can get out of hand quite quickly. And from what I understand about how the game is structured, these areas are all there to be revisited once your at a higher level as they open up more for you.
I'm not at a level where I can go back and open up the Tower yet.

I'm currently enjoying Velmorne, its very challenging and can get out of control very easily. One minute your owning everything, the next everything is piling down on you, and you're desperate to get to the exit gate before death. And that Sepulcher is a ridiculous enemy. Once he's caught sight of you, he'll hunt you down with a lot of strength and attack combo's. A great fight, superb when you win, but not when you dont :D Oh and I've managed to collect all 30 bones, so spoiler alert, I'm not saying anything.

Amazing that this is EA and not full game. I cant remember the last time I had this amount of fun from such a polished game.

what does this compare to ? any advice for a new player, im at a bit of a loss

Its a bit like dark souls with guns , bit of rogue like, but you have to extract so theres that too.
But as someone who never had the patience for any souls games apart from Elden Ring i love Witchfire plus its as hard as you want it to be.
