WLAN detection

is it possible for me to search all wireless devices (access points and clients) within the range of my network card on my laptop?

It should do it automatically when looking for something to connect to.

I'm not sure if it picks up clients, but NetStumbler may be what you're looking for

I have had two experiences with wireless cards and on both it was possible to let them search for available networks to connect to.

Don't forget to use SSID otherwise the neighbours can use your network
