So recently reformatted my system and decided to give a free music player a go, as I'm getting a tad bored with Winamp.

So far people have recommended Windows Media Player or Foobar, which in the freeware utilities thread are highly praised. Used to use WMP in the past but apparently it has got better?
(father In-law swears by it)

As for Foobar I've never used it, but heard good things about it for a free prog.

Any advice, hints or tips would be greatly appreciated :D

Doesn't cost you anything to try both out, see which one you like best.

I recommend foobar2000 if you like customisation or want a simple design.
It's arguably the most powerful music players with plugins too.

Yeah I got Foobar, just to try, a lot more fiddly than WMP but closer to Winamp for my liking.

Just annoys me how it splits song on albums with contributing artists into seperate categories.

Maybe check out columns UI? You can define custom tags for which to sort your stuff by. It's what I do.

I do think foobar is a bit like Linux though, it's hideous out the box but you can tweak it to what you like!

If the "Album Artist" tag field is populated and is common to all the tracks on a particular album, it won't do this, at least in its default configuration (you could just use "Various Artists" for compilation albums if there's nothing specified on the album itself).

Id expect it with compilation albums, but some of the hip hop I have like Jurassic 5 Ft. Nelly Furtado, that track will be in order in the album list (in a playlist) but under it's own heading of Jurassic 5 & Nellly Furtado, if you get me.

If the "artist" field differs between tracks on a particular album (eg one track is "Jurassic 5" and another is "Jurassic 5 Ft. Nelly Furtado"), the default behaviour is to split them *unless* there is a common "album artist" tag to tie the album together.

Just select all the tracks in the album, right-click - Properties, clear whatever appears in the "Album Artist" field (it'll probably be "multiple values" plus individual names*), enter "Jurassic 5" and hit Apply or OK.

I should just mention that foobar2000 recently changed the way it maps the "Album Artist" field, which may sometimes cause inconsistencies with MP3 id3v2 tags, but we'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it. :)

*edit: sorry, I had a brain fart - you'll see "multiple values" in the "artist" field, not "album artist"... *don't* clear this, obviously. The "album artist" field should be blank, so put "Jurassic 5" in there (you can clear it if for some reason it duplicates the "artist" field or has any other data).

Apologies for making it all as clear as mud. :)

Cheers :D

I just spent a chunk of this weekend, re-tagging my 72gig of music and getting all the spellings and stuff right, mundane things we get up to whilst we're off our feet. Mp3Tag is what I used, discovered it after doing up to D manually Lol.
