Woking

Surrey varies quite a bit.

Avoid Leatherhead - I work there and it's extremely boring

Avoid Croydon - I live there and you will get stabbed

Congrats on the job offer and welcome to Surrey!

Wading into the thread quite late, really where to live has got to be down to your priorities between commute to work & the area. Particularly if you're working in London you will notice the difference between Woking and Guildford/Haslemere etc

i.e. for Woking, train every 10 minutes, usually no stops between Woking/Waterloo (sometimes Clapham Junction) and journey time of ~24-28mins

Whereas for Guildford, every other train will take you 1h instead of the 35 minute journey
However you say you're more likely to drive so then this might not bother either of you.

Woking Town center is alright for shops and a few restaurants, I can't comment on the nightlife. But then if you end up working in London its far better to go out there, and just get the last train home.

Heading in the Guildford direction will be a lot prettier, and given the university there is more of a nightlife if that's your thing. But there commands a lot higher premium in rent & property prices.

If you need to get to Godalming, is there any reason you've not considered living there?

Might see you around then if my wife gets her way... Congrats on the job!

PS I lived in Croydon for most of my life, go back every now and then, not been stabbed yet. ;)
I have lived in croydon for all of my life and haven't been stabbed, but several of my friends have. :(

If we live in Godalming it means my GFs commute to Kingston is a lot longer. We have looked there, but there isn't much in our price range.

For the short term Woking or Guildford are more central and will provide a good base to get to know the area.

I live in Bramley, just south of Guildford.
Really love it! Just moved house but stayed in the same village since we like it so much. Settled here with the family.
The villages around the south of Guildford are really nice but you do pay a bit of a premium.

I'm shattered.

Hopefully if the landlady accepts our offer and what we want (I wasn't to put a Sky dish up) then we should have a nice little 2 bed house in Merrow.

Heh we drove around Woking today to get a feel for the area. Went to see Ripely, Send, Mayford, St Johns, Hook Heath, Knaphill, Bisley, Brookwood, Chobham then lunch at the harvester in Ottershaw. A few of the areas were ideal, others not so much. Will be contacting some agents soon, will be hard finding something on our own. Who knows, we might be neighbours in the near future!

PS good luck!

As I posted earlier in the thread - I've lived in Woking all my life, work in Guildford and know the areas and roads very well.

If anybody is looking at properties / places and would like to know my opinion of the area and roads they are looking at let me know.

Well, the offer we made last weekend fell through, so we were back up there today with another 8 viewings lined up.

Saw a couple of nice flats and a decent house in Old Woking, another nice but small place in Knaphill, and a complete dive in the complete hole that is Sheerwater. I totally get what people were saying earlier in the thread :D.

And then on the way home, had our offer accepted and paid the holding fee on a 3 bed house in... Dorking! :p
Working out our commutes Dorking is actually better for us, and because its not a commuter hub houses are cheaper.

Anyone on here from around there? I need suggestions for good pubs for afternoon chilling or going for a meal. Also any other suggestions.

having lived in guildford my whole life (parents still have a house there so feel like i still live there), i now live in woking and have for a year and i would recommend it over guildford any day. i don't know if it's just me but i own a car, so if i want to go shopping i can easily get in the car and drive 10 minutes more and be in the next town.

the cinema is rubbish in woking but then i go to a different town, and the nightlife is the worst, but imo picking a town based on the nightlife is silly and guildford is so close that it's never been an issue. london is a nice quick train ride away which is great as it's easy to convince people to go to london for a day out.

i own a cleaning company so see a lot of properties when they move out and find woking to have a larger amount of rented properties, of which they are fairly decent and low rent. i cleaned one last week in dorchester court, woking, which was a 1 bed flat fo £650 p/m. no garden of course but a 5 minute bike ride from the centre of town.

Where in Old Woking, do you know the road name? :) /stalking

I can think of several places in Woking that are open past 10.30 of an evening, even into the morning on the weekends. Gasp. :D

Alas, they're all pony.

Wish you'd have been with us during a night out after a conference a couple of months back, granted it was a Tuesday night but we couldn't find a drink past 10.30! Even the hotel bar shut up shop early.
