Wondering if new CPU cooler will fit?

Hello all.

I am going to slowly step into the world of overclocking.
I have a 4690K and I have had it for about a year. I think the time has come to delve into the dark arts.

I am looking at getting the budget ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2. I know far far from the best cooler and I won't be able to overclock much but that's kind of the whole point. I want to "dip my toe in the water" here and do some small overclocking on a budget. My case is poor too so that would be a heat bottle neck for sure. I simply don't have the money for a new case or super fancy CPU cooler so thought I would get something better than stock just to learn how to overclock small amounts first.

Thing is, I've been watching videos of this cooler and I'm just not sure it will even fit? I have some pretty "tall" RAM, even in slots 2 and 4. Im just not sure. Does anyone with experience know if this will fit?

Many thanks guys.

P.S. Please forgive the ugly setup and "wires all over the place"
I realise that will make some stomachs turn here but I'm just not an aesthetics kind of guy.

Ahh sorry I should be clear. Im wondering more if it will clear the ram. I see it getting very close to even low profile ram in videos. Measurements says it will fit in the case fine.

out of interest what case are you using?
also are you local to me and I can come round and tidy up you're cables... I know mine aren't great but yours scare me..

Thanks for the links, very helpful.
Yeah looks like it would only foul slot 1. When I get more ram I'll make sure it's low profile stuff.
Thanks for the offer lol. Be careful what you wish for though because I am actually fairly local to you! Lol I'm in Glasgow.

My case is a aero cool midi or something. It was literally the cheapest one I could buy at the time as I put all my budget into the componenets when I built it. It only has 1 case Fan (I have since bought a new, better one. I was thinking about having a look on eBay for a second hand empty case, must be quite cheap.

I might take you up on that! Appriciate it

I've got a baby coming in Feb so I'm on a major budget here, and as I mentioned in another post just wanting to tinker with my rig to keep it relevant.

I came to the conclusion that instead of buying RAM or SSD the most cost effective way of getting more out of her would be overclocking (after me saying I didn't want to...lol). All I have to buy would be CPU cooler.

So the order will be:
CPU cooler (overclocking)
RAM (I do a lot of video editing)
New case (if needed)
SSD
Another GTX970 for SLI (when occulus rift arrives).

Yup it's our first. Everything going smoothly so far. What I will do is get the new CPU cooler (I'm actually going to go for the Arctic freezer 13 as its a bit better. Another £5 would get me the cooler master 212 but I dont want to have to remove the motherboard at this stage and the CM requires that on my rig). the Arctic 13 gets good reviews. Alas I digress. Once I've got the cooler ill check temps and then maybe hit you up for a bit of overclocking fun!

Slightly off topic but do you think If I got another 970 in SLI, overclocked the CPU and maybe got another 8GB ram I would be able to game in 4K? Not something I can do right now but would be nice to know if it's possible in the future. Certainly that should run the 2x 1080p screens of an occulus rift but wondering if it would run 4k? (4 times the workload of 1080p I believe?)

As I get older my imagination gets weaker so I'm a bit of a whore for tasty immersive graphics. :p

the 970 is still a strong card and at its price its one of the best.
your like me you havent got £400 to drop on a 980 let alone £500 on a single 980ti the 970 fits our budget and is the best within the price range.

the x9 390 is also a good card but ive heard horror stories regarding driver issues on the 390's

I'm a total idiot. Just realised that its a GTX770 I've got not a 970!

No need for a new case though. Got inventive with a hole saw and some new fans. Plenty case airflow now! lol.

Yeah will get some pics up, I've got a stealth fan hiding in a drive bay too! lol. I still need to sort the cable because its not a great case you cant put them "behind" the motherboard, or in the back of the case.
One thing still concerns me about the case being a midi, the case side is very close to the top of the GPU and that part of the case gets very warm. Was thinking of fitting an "OUT" fan there but it would need to be on the outside of the case and worried it might conflict with the GPUs own fans. Alas I digress.

The case you mentioned is really nice looking. Looks like it takes a lot of fans too. I like it! In an ideal world I would like a positive pressure in the case and filters on the intake fans as my house gets very dusty with 2 dogs. Would be nice to have that on my setup.

Thats true. But the air will be quite a bit warmer on your desk than it is on the floor. Particularly at this time of year. My floor is hardwood and the temp right down there is much colder than at desk height.

theres how mines sits the now.
the desk was bought to fit in a space at the old house but since moving I could get a bigger one.
carpet over concrete floors in the lounge. my pc sits in the coolest corner in the room

Thats a sweet setup. This is my fan setup now. I think it looks OK. I realise it's a negative case pressure setup but should be OK. I can clean the dust regularly.

This is a bit conserning..

I just did a stress test on my new work PC and got these temps from HW monitor. It's a very roomy case with 3 120mm fans. Stock CPU cooler though. Nothing is overclocked at all. This is how it came out of the box. Is that not crazy high? or do AMD just run hotter? It's an AMD 7700K. The stress test was only running for a couple of minutes at most before I stopped it when I got the fear.

And those temps whilst certainly high are not scary you could always change the CPU paste or clean the fins on it.

Thing is it's brand new. Last week i got it. (work ordered everyone new computers, they were buying lenovos from PC world and I begged my boss to let me get my own). She agreed and when the team ended up with i3's 4gb RAM and onboard graphics I, for the same money got a 7700k, 8GB RAM and a Nvidea GTX950. no bad I thought.

Alas I digress. The cpu came already fitted and the fans are clean. I'm hesitant to buy a new cooler for it because it would be out of my own pocket for a work computer.

looking good. is that the define s case?

NZXT S340 :)
I was hoping you would pick up this thread again :)
Only thing I am going to do from here is get some blue/black 24pin / PCIE cable extensions and maybe get some custom ram heat spreaders. But as baby on the way that will have to wait. I'm happy with looks and temps now.
