I have a 3/4" solid cherrywood floor nailed to 3/4" ply backing through out my hallway and living room.
The living room has patio doors leading out in to the garden and the floor in this area is taking a real hammering after 7 years.
What i would like to do is inlay a mat in to the floor (i did this in the hall way but as i was laying it!).
Any ideas what i could use to cut out the rectangle of cherry flooring? some sort of drill attachment cutting disk or router?
I would then waterproof the cut out, edge it in aluminium or brass angle and lay in the mat.
Suggestions please:)

I would have though something like an Exakt Saw would do the job. As long as you mark out the hole accurately you should be able to set the cutting depth and go through the floor.

If it was me doing it I'd just use a jigsaw, but you need to be careful not to go too deep. It takes a bit of practise holding the jigsaw at the right angle.

Best bet would probably be a router as you can set the depth and plunge in to the timber. But if you hit a nail it'll more than likely destroy the bit.
