Word document encoding

Hey,

My friend has sent me her uni work which has gone mental. The essay she was writing has been replaced by squares and other random gibberish.

I thought it was the encoding but when i try and change it nothing happens.

Is the file corrupt or can it be solved?

Perhaps an unknown font or language? That results in a bunch of squares.

What format is the file? .doc or .docx?

.doc

I tried converting it to another language then back to english but nothing. I thought that was the problem

You should search her machine and see if theres any temp copies of the document. Sometimes they are left behind if the main document is corrupt.

Are you sure its a doc?
I've had people rename PDF's and other formats to doc in the past.

100% its a .doc

I can't search her machine, she is at brighton uni.
She is taking her laptop to the uni technicians so hopefully all will be well

Get her to windows search her machine then. Look for documents of all types with text shes knows is definately in it.
