To upgrade to the latest version what is needed to ensure that the blog entries remain in tact?

There's an option to upgrade automatically but that times out.

Provided you have a pretty simple installation without any custom changes.

Download the files.
Upload them over your installation via ftp.
Navigate to the upgrade.php file in your web browser if you need to (wordpress/wp-admin/upgrade.php).

Just remember to NOT upload the config.php file, overwriting your existing one, as I did once...

The config file is called "wp-config-sample.php" now, so you shouldn't accidentally overwrite any more.

So, replace all files except the config.php (as this contains info about the database it references) then head to to the upgrade.php in the browser?

Pretty much.

Depending on how only your current install you might not need to run the upgrade.php file. As far as I know that's only required if there's updates to the database.
