WordPress file permissions?

On my blog, I'm a bit confused as to the file permissions, in that it would never let me edit the themes using the built in editor, so I just used my FTP client to copy things across and back.

However, I'd like to use the automatic upgrade function on the All in One SEO plugin, but it's giving me file permission errors even after CHMODing the plugins directory and all below it to be 775...

Anybody got any clues? Is the user I'm logging into WordPress the same as I'm using for FTP?

Nobody? They keep releasing updates to the SEO plugin, I'm fed up of having to do them manually

It should be a case of chmodding the wp-content folder to 777 according to an article the wp codex, however you should tick the box which makes this recursive for all sub-folders too.

I thought 777 was naughty?

I think you can do 755 also
