Hi folks,

Have decided this year I'd like to sit down and learn to use a CMS of some sort. Wordpress seems to be generally thought of as a bit more user friendly than Joomla (only from what I've quickly Googled online that is, feel free to disagree with that  ) so I was wondering if anyone had any good links to free online sites and resources for a complete beginner to WP? I've a fairly good working knowledge of XHTML and CSS but other than that I've no other particular skills in this field.

Any advice appreciated. :)

Depends really what you want to do Wordpress has a PHP based back end so obviously knowledge of PHP would be an advantage.
Have a look over at nettuts see if they have anything on it.

Ok is this to learn how to do it yourself or just to make a website?

If its just to get a site up and running then themeforest have lots of premade themes for you to buy and use, most are very customization-able. or there is http://www.lubith.com/ which you can make one online and download.

To use wordpress as a website rather then a blog you use 'pages' and thes act in the same way as a static page

A mixture of both, really.

I've created a few static XHTML websites and now want to see how Wordpress does it, so I'll be learning along the way about how Wordpress works as well as trying to get to grips with themes and how to create a site with WP itself. That's the plan anyway. :D

I've got Softaculous in my server cPanel so I think the installation should be fairly straightforward. One question though, I've a couple of spare domains lying unused which are not registered with the same company I have my hosting with. I assume if I create an addon domain in my cPanel, install Wordpress to a directory within that addon domains folder and then nip over to 1 and 1 to point the domain at my hosting nameservers that everything should work ok?

The way I would do it, Is install wordpress with Softaculous its a one click install really easy.

Then either use the 2013 or 2014 theme that comes with it and make a basic site.
Go over to http://www.lubith.com/ make a theme online there. Install that and see what happens. You can have multiple themes installed you just activate the one you want.
Look at the code and hack away from there.
DONT HACK THE CORE!!

look at http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development
http://code.tutsplus.com/categories/wordpress
http://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/tutorials/how-to-build-a-custom-wordpress-theme-from-scratch

That should work OK I think

I have just got a few domains and some web hosting with vidahost. I do not know what I am doing at all. I have googled and downloaded a pretend server program (xampp). I am trying to follow some online tutorials but my mind is not up to it at the moment, so I will try tomorrow.
Does anyone have some easy tips for setting up a simple website that just informs people of a service with a few click through pages and an email section?
Sorry for hijack OP I could start a new thread.

edit: forgot to say I am trying to use Joomla.

No worries dpbadger. I tried dabbling with Joomla a while back and gave up deciding to concentrate on learning XHTML and CSS first which I think was the right choice. Have been dabbling on and off with Wordpress in a casual sort of way and not really getting anywhere but if truth be told I've not really made time to sit down properly with it yet.
