Hi guys,

I have no experience with website design. I'm after setting up a website for my new business and Wordpress seems to be an easy way to go about it because they have templates which saves designing your own.

Has anyone here used Wordpress for this type of thing before and what do you think of it?

With Wordpress, would it be possible to have PayPal/Google Checkout integration?

Thanks

I use it for an online portfolio. Not sure how well it would work for a business but it depends on what your product is.

Not sure on Paypal/Google Checkout integration, but you can search Wordpress's plugins via there website to find out

Thanks for the help guys.

I notice Wordpress have some hosting partners that make the installation of wordpress pretty easy.

Before I even started to setup the website with Wordpress, I assume I'd need to buy hosting and a domain name?

Cheers

Yes you would have to buy hosting and a domain name.

Look at Vidahost and TSOHost

I'm not to sure about TSOHost, because I don't use them I use Vidahost, but through cPanel they have Fantastico which gives you virtually one-click installation of a very wide range of software including Wordpress.

See the list here.

Easy as anything, so that would be my advice, go with a Vidahost package, either Basic or Starter.

Hope that helps.

I can vouch for tsohost, I use them and they've never let me down.

Also, www.themeforest.net is easy the best repository of premium Wordpress themes, they have various shops aswell, aslong as you're confident enough to edit a theme yourself then you're working with a powerful tool.

Wordpress is a powerful tool indeed. Currently rebuilding our corporate site with it. I too got a theme from themeforest.net as my starting point, but I have heavily customised it.

The main reason I bought the theme was to easily see how to get Wordpress away from its blogging roots. The plugins and template system is fantastic, but you will require some PHP knowledge to get the most out of it if you want any custom functionality.

TSOHost currently have fantastico setup to install 2.9.2 and we're up to 3.0. With 3.0 you get a lot more cms functionality, and quite a few nice features which aren't supported by all themes...

Once you've installed Wordpress, you should just be able to click a button to upgrade to the latest version if you're not running the latest.

Of course, but the 3.0 install doesn't give you an admin user which you then have to delete to help your security out...

Vidahost are ace! Very very affordable and their support is A1. Their servers are all maintained very professionally.

I've been with them for 4 years and never wanted to move.

I use Joomla as a CMS, its popular and has a lot of modules, components and templates you can download. I have used wordpress when designing a website, but its more suitable for blogs I think.

Do you need SSL though if your using Paypal/GoogleCheckout with WP E-commerce though, all the card info is entered on their servers and then your returned back to your site. Or is there something I'm missing?

Btw I just started using Wordpress 3.0 with Vidahost, seems pretty good so far. Starting to develope my own themes from scratch now though.

You don't need to no. The monetary transaction will be all done on their server so legally they will have that covered.

However, you may transmit customer details to save time on them filling out forms if they have already signed up to your store etc. And for customer piece of mind it is common to look for the golden padlock when adding things to a cart or signing up somewhere.

I gotta mention Starkers naked theme for Wordpress theme desiging :)

Its a complete theme thats been stripped of all markup that comes with Twenty Ten default theme. Its designed as a starting point for clean theme design. I use it because I can make very clean themes without all the crap.

How come i get a warning for that site ?

The creator Elliot Jay Stocks was hit a few times with that piece of malware. It had corrupted his Wordpress site, but it was supposedly fixed. So its either back or the message you're seeing hasn't checked to see if the site has been updated since the attack.
